If ever the success of any band were to be used to measure just how bizarre the music industry really can be, it must be that of Catfish and The Bottlemen. One billion streams, two million album sales and ten million single sales.
They sold half a million concert tickets in their first five years and we are reliably informed by their PR they have played to over two million people. All quite staggering stuff for a band that are, at best, shite.
And so after a five-year hiatus the band, (I say band, these days it seems to be just Ryan ‘Van’ McCann) are back with the ‘surprise’ new single ‘Showtime’ and I’m sorry to say there is no surprise. It’s exactly the kind of drivel you’d expect from a pound shop Foo Fighters.
Perhaps I’m being unfair but when it arrives in the same week as press copies of Gallagher Squire, The Libertines and The K’s, it is genuinely hard to understand how this band ever had any success in the first place, let alone why they’ve bothered us again. I’m all for the return of the big stadium rock sound, but not when it sounds like some geeky sixth-form band floundering on a church hall stage.
