Loose Women fans left cringing at Catherine Tates Nan interview as she slates panel
The comedy star left viewers unimpressed when she rocked up as her foul mouthed nan character with fans finding her unfunny and wishing she'd been Catherine rather than her character

Loose Women fans were left cold by Catherine Tate in character as Joannie Taylor – aka her foul mouthed Nan character – as she rocked up on the panel to promote her new film.

Viewers were left cringing as they tuned into the ITV daytime show and branded the comedy queen ‘not funny’ and were left wishing 53-year-old Catherine had been interviewed as herself rather than her potty-mouthed character.

The star has a big screen outing of her grandmother character hitting cinemas at the end of the week – with ‘Nan’ from The Catherine Tate Show getting her own spin-off called Nan: The Movie.

And while the star raised some giggles by appearing on Loose Women on Monday and looking unimpressed by the panel consisting of Ruth Langsford, Nadia Sawalha, Linda Robson and Carol McGiffin – asking instead for Denise Welch and Kirsty Alsopp – overall, those tuning in were not amused.

Taking to Twitter, fans lined up to slam the actress, with one writing: “I like Catherine Tate but this isn’t funny #LooseWomen.”

Another complained: “#LooseWomen I love Catherine Tate as a person, but I must be getting old as I don't find Nan funny anymore.”

Another viewer tweeted: “Eek. Not sure Nan can extend to a whole film…. This interview is already cringe #LooseWomen” – with another claiming there was “forced laughter” from the panel.

And another complained: “I'd have preferred to see a proper interview with Catherine Tate. #LooseWomen.”

Some viewers did, however, love Catherine’s in-character appearance.

One tweeted in approval, writing: “OMG!!!!! Absolutely howling at Nan on #LooseWomen can’t wait to see the movie. Asking for @RealDeniseWelch oh she’s a diva with @McGiff.”

Another wrote: “Nan asking where Kirsty Allsopp is [crying-with-laughter emoji] #LooseWomen.”

And another begged: “@loosewomen please keep Catherine Tates Nan as a regular loose woman…. She would keep us all smiling.”

Catherine first introduced Nan to the world way back in 2004 when she launched her BBC sketch series The Catherine Tate Show.

Since then, the Nan character has appeared in a number of spin-off made-for-TV films – but her own big screen movie will hit cinemas on Friday.

The film will see Catherine reunited with Gavin & Stacey star Matthew Horne who returns to play long-suffering grandson, Jamie.

Fellow The Catherine Tate Show alum Niky Wardley who famously played one of Lauren ‘Am I Bovvered’ Cooper’s best friends is among the cast playing Officer Mahler.

Film director Josie Rourke has previously told Digital Spy: "I think I speak for loads of us when I say that my Gran's spirit lives in Catherine Tate's immortal Nan.

Some viewers, however, were desperate for Nan to be a permanent panelist on the show ( ITV)

"I have loved working with Catherine over the years on stage, and it is a massive treat to put her Nan on film.

"Here's to her Nan, my Nan, all our Nans. Let's reclaim outrage from loathsome politicians and put it back where it belongs: with our Nans."
