Jake Wightman lit the fuse for his 2025 with a stunning comeback run at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

The 2022 World Champion over 1500m has had injury issues for the past 18 months or so and has raced only 10 times in two years.

But Jake proved the ability to deliver a big kick is still there as a 7:44.94 run to win the Scottish 3000m Men’s Senior gold in a stirring Championship Best Performance at the GAA Miler Meet.

And then he underlined his ambitions for the coming weeks and months with his sights set on racing at both the European Indoors and the World Indoors.

Sarah Calvert won the Senior Women’s title with a  PB run of 9:15.67 as the Livingston AC athlete headed Stefanie Tucker of Cambuslang Harriers and Lynn McKenna of Shettleston Harriers.

‘I am delighted with that run and my time as I was looking to be around the 7:50 mark,’ said Jake.

‘It is my first Scottish title in a long time and a big thank you to everyone who helped make it happen including the event organisers the Glasgow Athletics Association, Scottish Athletics and the pace-makers.

‘I didn’t think we would be that fast but the redeveloped Emirates is fantastic and looked to be a quick track at the World Indoors last year.

‘I’m just so pleased to be racing again. It was my first since June and now the plan is to keep racing indoors and see if I can represent GB and NI at the Europeans and the World Indoors as well.’

Thomas Keen (9:45.87) took second with Jake kicking beyond him over the final 200m or so with Thomas Bridger further back in third place (7:53.66).

Sarah Calvert plans to be back at the Emirates Arena for the EAP Indoor International over 800m.

‘I am pleased to get a 3000m PB and take the win,’ said Sarah.

‘I would like to have run faster but it is only my third time at 3000m and only my second indoors.

‘It’s a good start and I am looking to do some indoors down south including the British Champs and back here for the EAP Indoor International.’

Tucker clocked 9:23.57 and McKenna was at 9:25.07.

Reiss Marshall of Fife AC won the U20 Men’s gold in 8:20.77. He was followed home by Andrew McWilliam (Lasswade) at 8:25.28 and Kieran Fulton (Moorfoot) at 8:26.22.

Zara Redmond of Kilbarchan AAC won the U20 Women’s title in 9:40.29. Zara was followed home by Jessica Taylor (Edinburgh Ac) at 9:48.84 and Layla Taylor (Shetland) 9:52.31.

Strathearn Harriers athlete, Eilidh Dallas, took the U17 Women’s gold in 9:48.68. Eilidh was followed home by Matilda Frew (East Kilbride AC) at 10:41.32 and Anna Ross (VP- Glasgow) at 10:44.71.

Springburn Harriers athlete, Angus Fraser-Moodie, took the U17 Men’s title in 8:57.75. Angus was followed home by Aaron Reid (Giffnock North) in 8:55.96 and Ben Baillie (East Kilbride) at 9:08.14.

Big thank you to the GAA as always for huge help with this event and to our superb scottishathletics Officials for making it happen.
