This Chinese New Year on Saturday February 10, we'll be celebrating the Year of the Dragon.

A whole host of events will take place across Manchester city centre this weekend - which has already been ornamented with red lanterns - including the return of the much-loved dragon parade. Other events in Chinatown including arts and crafts, a fun fair and a food market.

In one ancient myth, the Jade Emperor, ruler of heaven, declared that the order of zodiac signs would be based on the order that each of the 12 animals finished a great race where they had to cross a river.

According to the legend, the Dragon finished the race in fifth place, despite being able to fly. The Jade Emperor was surprised that such a fast airborne creature did not come in first, and the Dragon explained that it had been held back because it had stopped by a village to bring rain to the people.

On continuing the race, it saw the helpless Rabbit clinging onto a log in the river, and gave a puff of breath to help it reach the shore. The Jade Emperor was astonished by the Dragon's good nature, and it was named as the fifth animal.

While a little eccentric, those born in the year of the Dragon have several admirable traits - they are typically thought to be decisive, sensitive, and ambitious.

And when it comes to love, they are the most compatible with those born in the year of the Rat, Tiger and Snake, whose personalities often complement these traits.
