United States Strictly's Claudia Winkleman shares of her devastation as son leaves home
Strictly Come Dancing presenter Claudia Winkleman has shared her heartbreak with fans now that her son has left home for university.
Last year, Claudia, 50, expressed the anxiety she felt regarding the separation from her son and threatened to quit Strictly if she was unable to be with him on his first day of uni.
Earlier this week, the mother-of-three spoke openly to presenters Lorraine Candy and Trish Halpin on their podcast From Midlife Podcast and said she felt "heartbroken" that her son has now gone and admitted to handling the transition "badly".
Talking about her 18-year-old son Jake Thykier, Lorraine asked Claudia on the details about her separation.
Lorraine said: "You’ve spoken about having to learn to separate from (your children) and this is the big separating time, when they go to university.”
Claudia replied: "I handle it very badly. One is at university and I felt heartbroken.
"But it’s not fair on him for me to just keep him here with me all the time, just having three meals a day and me looking in his eyes and going, 'I’m not being funny but if you love that Rolling Stones album would you consider listening to this Led Zeppelin song.'
Claudia added that her 18-year-old son wants to be with his friends and she must allow him the chance to do so.
She shared: "He doesn’t want to do that. He wants to be with his friends. Roots and wings and all that, you have to give them both."
Discussing her own experience with her mother, Claudia added: "I remember my mum dropping me off at university and she could not stop crying.
"I said to myself, 'I won’t do that and I’ll be brave.' Of course, I fell apart because they’re my life."
Claudia and her husband Kris Thykier share three children together, Jake Matilda, 14, and Arthur, 10.
The couple had a secret wedding ceremony in 2010 in London.
Speaking about her marriage to Red magazine the star previously said: "You see, Kris is very Scandinavian. We've been together for 22 years and he's never once said to me, 'What's for dinner?' It's always been, 'What shall we have for dinner?'"
