Is Daredevil season 4 really happening? (Update: December 16, 2021)

In April 2015, Marvel and Netflix launched what would be the first of a handful of original programs based on Marvel comics characters with the launch of Daredevil. 

The series was a breakout success, helping to give Netflix a breakout title which quickly spawned a successful franchise of programs which included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist and the event series The Defenders, which united the casts from the series — sans The Punisher — for one epic crossover series.

It seemed like the future was brighter than ever for the franchise, but then Marvel and Netflix’s relationship went south. Within the span of only a few months, Netflix pulled the plugs on each of its Marvel series including the series that started it all with the cancellation of Daredevil in 2018 following the launch of its third season.

In the years that have followed the shocking cancellation of Daredevil, fans have been holding out hope that Daredevil season 4 could one day become a reality. While it looked like those dreams might never come to fruition, a new rumor suggests Daredevil will soon rise again with a fourth season planned on Netflix’s newest competitor: Disney Plus.

On Oct. 2, a new rumor emerged online suggesting Disney Plus and Marvel Studios were looking to bring back Daredevil beginning with the characters returning in the upcoming Disney Plus original series Echo. 

According to the rumor, Disney Plus was looking to bring back several fan-favorite characters from Netflix’s Daredevil series as a way to reintroduce them into the Marvel Universe. The rumor stated that Marvel Studios was actively developing a Daredevil project led by Charlie Cox which is expected to be Daredevil season 4.

Currently, the only known source of the rumor is Marvel insider Daniel Richtman, who may or may not have dropped the report via Patreon, an insider who has been known to be on the mark when it’s come with insider scoops.

At this time, there are no confirmed reports from Disney Plus or any major reputable outlets which have confirmed the rumors that Disney Plus is looking to revive Daredevil for a fourth season. That said, it is looking likely that Disney Plus is working on Daredevil season 4.

Warning: Mild Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home Spoilers ahead

It was long rumored that Marvel Studios was looking to bring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio back into the fold to reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively.

Those rumors finally proved to be true in December 2021, with the beloved Daredevil actors making their formal debuts in the MCU via two of the month’s big releases.

D’Onofrio’s return to the MCU was first teased in the penultimate episode of Hawkeye season 1, with his character set to play a larger role in the finale. Meanwhile, Cox made his highly speculated return with an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home which has many hoping a larger role is to now follow.

As noted above, the growing speculation is that both characters could play significant roles in Marvel’s Echo which is looking highly likely given the ways in which the characters have since popped up in the MCU.

Should the characters return for Echo, the growing hope among fans is that the next step would be an official Daredevil-led project which isn’t looking out of the question given how things are coming together. Daredevil season 4 would be a perfect follow-up project to Echo and allow Disney to revisit these beloved characters to the best of their abilities.

Bringing Daredevil back as a Disney Plus original would definitely create buzz among fans and this is one Netflix Original we’ve long hoped to see more of, and D’Onofrio and Cox’s returns absolutely suggests there is a masterplan already in place. In other words, while Daredevil season 4 might not yet be confirmed the odds of a fourth season happening are looking better and better with each passing day!
