Deadpool & Wolverine's first trailer features a brief look at Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but this variant of the iconic mutant will likely join the MCU sporting a few major differences. The highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine trailer sets the stage for the MCU's only 2024 movie, which follows Wade Wilson in a multiversal mission after he gets recruited by the TVA. With just a few glimpses at Wolverine in the trailer, the question of how he ends up crossing paths with Deadpool now becomes one of Deadpool & Wolverine's biggest mysteries.

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine received a definitive conclusion to his 17-year movie run in Fox's X-Men franchise. He reset the X-Men movietimeline after changing the past in order to rewrite the Sentinel invasion out of existence in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but he couldn't avoid the mutants' extinction in Logan. Soon after, Wolverine succumbed to an attack by his clone following the deterioration of his healing factor due to adamantium poisoning. Yet, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine appears to be back at full power and especially aggressive in the MCU's upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine.

Is Wolverine In Deadpool 3 The Same One In Logan?

Although the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer doesn't show much footage of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, it's clear that this version of the character is at least slightly different from the one seen in Fox's X-Men franchise. Wolverine is briefly seen hanging out at a bar wearing his white "Patch" tuxedo from the comics, and he first meets Deadpool in what seems to be the MCU's Void — the place where all pruned variants are exiled by the TVA. Hence, Deadpool & Wolverine's Wolverine variant may have been pruned some time before the near-future events of Logan — or its alternative-reality equivalent — had the chance to happen.

Deadpool & Wolverine's first trailer puts plenty of focus on the TVA. In one shot, a TVA agent begs Deadpool for help before a shadow scoops him up. Considering the presence of the 20th Century Fox logo and other debris on the battlefield, this scene may take place in the Void, and the shadow may be the cloud monster Alioth. As seen in Loki, Alioth eats all pruned variants he finds and keeps them from reaching He Who Remains' Citadel at the End of Time. One of the variants who may have been escaping Alioth before Deadpool arrived may be Wolverine.

How Wolverine Is Alive In Deadpool 3

The MCU has countless ways to introduce Hugh Jackman's new Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine. This Wolverine's backstory could be as close to the original one or as different as Marvel desires. Deadpool & Wolverine could explain that its Wolverine variant found a way to cure his adamantium poisoning, or simply suggest that it never happened. But if Wolverine really was sent to the Void, it's possible that he made a decision the TVA considered inappropriate for his timeline. Perhaps avoiding death is the reason he comes into conflict with Deadpool and the TVA in Deadpool & Wolverine.
