Dele Alli capped off what was a whirlwind transfer deadline day for Everton and its fans.
The midfielder completed his move from Tottenham to Merseyside late on Monday night, joining fellow new boy Donny van de Beek and manager Frank Lampard who was appointed the club’s new manager.
“I’m delighted to have signed for Everton, a huge club with a great fanbase and history,” the 25-year-old said.
“I’m eager to get started and can’t wait for my first game in an Everton shirt.
“I’m looking forward to helping the team and the opportunity to work with the new manager Frank Lampard.”
The actual transfer, though, is unusual with Everton signing Alli on an initial free transfer with £10m payable after 20 appearances.
The player will be able to make only 18 Premier League appearances this season because he is cup-tied.
talkSPORT also understands there are significant add-ons’ that stretch beyond the £10m and the eventual fee could rise to about £30m over a two-and-a-half-year contract.
At one point it seemed like Newcastle would gatecrash the deal when they missed out on Man United’s Jesse Lingard, however, the move to Goodison Park was at an advanced stage as Alli was undergoing a medical.
Everton then announced the signing at 12.20am on Tuesday morning.
Alli made his senior debut for MK Dons – the club he joined as an 11-year-old – when he was 16, scoring 16 goals in a League One promotion-winning campaign in his final season in the 2014/15 campaign.
Everton’s rivals Liverpool were among those that wanted to sign him, but Tottenham won the race and he ended up playing 269 times for Spurs and scoring 67 goals since joining in February 2015.
The north London side posted a picture of Alli once he made the move, writing on Twitter: “Thank you for everything.”
He won the PFA Young Player of the Year in successive seasons in 2016 and 2017 and represented England at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup where he scored in the quarter-final against Sweden.
He later played for Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final, which they lost to Liverpool.
However, when manager Mauricio Pochettino was sacked he fell out with his successor, Jose Mourinho and although played a bit under Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte has decided his time is up.
