Dele Alli: Newcastle make late attempt to pip Everton to Tottenham midfielder
Newcastle United have made a dramatic late attempt to pip Everton to the signing of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele, after missing out on Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.
It is unclear whether their late move will be successful, with Newcastle making their approach in the final few hours of the window.
The Athletic understands Newcastle want to sign the 25-year-old on a loan deal.
The Athletic reported earlier on Monday that Everton were closing in on the permanent signing of Dele from Tottenham, with talks now in their final stages.
Frank Lampard’s side announced the signing of Donny van de Beek on loan from Manchester United ahead of tonight’s deadline.
Dele has only started eight league games this season — and just seven last campaign — and was made available for transfer in the January window.
The England international is poised to end his long association with Tottenham, seven years after he joined from MK Dons.
Dele has played 269 games for Spurs and scored 67 goals, as well as winning PFA Young footballer of the year twice.
