Destiny 2s fix to stop Onslaught leavers breaks activity Bungie suggests
leaving early
Destiny 2's Onslaught was updated to reward players who don't leave, but it broke the activity, leaving Bungie recommending quitting early.

Last week, Bungie announced that some changes were coming to Destiny 2‘s new Onslaught activity to incentivize players to stick through all 50 waves.

In a hilarious twist of fate, the weekly reset delivering those changes inadvertently broke Onslaught. Players couldn’t enter the portal to challenge the final boss at Wave 50 on Legend difficulty, and Bungie’s response was … a suggestion to leave the activity early.

Onslaught is a new activity released as part of the free Into the Light content update. As Destiny 2‘s first true horde mode activity, Guardians see how many waves they can tackle, facing a boss every ten waves with a maximum of 50. Initially, the fastest way to farm Onslaught wasn’t completing all 50 waves. Instead, resetting after the first boss on the Legend difficulty proved more rewarding. To offset this, Bungie announced that it would scale rewards up, with more opportunities for rewards the further players pushed into Onslaught and even more when participating at Legend difficulty.

What happened to Onslaught?

It would seem that something went wrong during Bungie’s tinkering to increase Onslaught rewards. While players could still fully engage with the activity on Normal difficulty, things come to a halt when approaching the finale on Legend. Normally, a portal appears after every nine waves to spirit the Fireteam away to a boss battle. This still happens for Wave 10, 20, 30, and 40 on Legend, but the Wave 50 portal is AWOL.

After the weekly reset, the Wave 50 portal no longer appeared, wasting players’ time and efforts over the last nine waves. Loot is only rewarded after each boss kill, so unknowing players put themselves through Onslaught’s most grueling Waves for nothing. Adding some salt to the wound, Bungie’s temporary solution was pure irony.

What does Bungie suggest until a fix comes?

Bungie quickly noticed something was amiss and took to X, formerly Twitter, to address the issue. In a series of posts, Bungie acknowledged that the boss portal wasn’t appearing after completing Wave 49 on Legend difficulty and advised players to avoid pushing past 40.

The studio noted, “We’re continuing to investigate this issue. Until a fix is implemented, players in Legend Onslaught are advised to defeat the boss and claim their rewards up to Wave 40, and then exit the activity.”

It’s undeniably a bit humorous that Bungie’s effort to stop early leavers broke Onslaught, resulting in a recommendation for players to leave early. But it’s still a shame that it had to happen when loot rate increases hit the activity.

Thankfully, Bungie took to social media again later that evening to let players know the issue was resolved, saying, “We have resolved the issue causing the portal to the boss room on Wave 50 of Legend Onslaught to not appear. Players currently in Legend Onslaught will need to return to orbit and restart the activity in order for the fix to take effect.”
