- DJ Randall, the pioneering drum & bass DJ often called "the godfather of breakbeat," has died, a representative confirmed to Resident Advisor. He was 54 years old. Alongside Fabio and Grooverider, Randall's innovative techniques revolutionised jungle throughout the '90s. A vinyl-obsessed teenager and amateur record-scratcher, he first encountered acid house at Notting Hill Carnival in 1987 before developing his own unique strand of breakbeat hardcore. A mainstay on pirate radio stations like Rave FM and Rinse FM, he earned a regular spot on Centreforce in 1989. By 1996, Randall had cofounded his own label with Cool Hand Flex, Mac2 Recordings, inspired by the closure of popular trading shop De-Underground Records. Randall also regularly handled the decks at The Blue Note Club alongside artists like Goldie and DJ Storm. He has been cited as a central influence by countless figures in the drum & bass scene, from Andy C to Nia Archives. We will continue updating this story as it unfolds.
