Chris Sutton believes Sean Dyche has “run out of patience” with Dominic Calvert-Lewin after he was dropped from the Everton lineup for the defeat to West Ham.
Speaking on the BBC Sport Monday Night Club podcast (4 March), the Sky Sports pundit was reacting to the Toffees’ 3-1 defeat to the Hammers at Goodison Park with striker Beto getting a rare start and scoring a goal, as well as missing a penalty.
And Sutton believes he got the nod over out-of-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin because the boss has now run out of patience with the 26-year-old.
“It was interesting at the weekend he was left out; Beto started and missed a penalty,” he said.
“I actually thought at the start of the season Everton’s hopes of staying in the Premier League were all on Calvert-Lewin and finding rhythm and a run of games.
“He has proven in the past that not only is he a decent goalscorer, but he can lead the line well.
“He started the season well, but he has just fallen away, he has hesitated, he’ll maybe say that he is not getting the service,” he added.
“He’s just lost his way the longer the season has gone on, and it looks at this moment in time like Sean Dyche has run out of patience with him; he has sort of played his way out of the team.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin deserved to be dropped by Everton
At the start of the season most people who were paying any attention to the Toffees believed that their chances of avoiding relegation relied heavily upon Calvert-Lewin getting fit and staying fit.
But while the 26-year-old has largely overcome the injury issues that have plagued him throughout his career and saw him miss much of the last two seasons, he’s really struggled in front of goal.
He has now gone over 20 games since his last goal for the club in all competitions, with the vast majority of those coming from the start and some terrible performances in the process.

A major issue has been the fact that he is severely lacking in confidence, and with the position that the team are in right now Dyche simply can’t afford to keep sticking by him if he isn’t performing.
Beto got a rare start and immediately made an impact by getting a goal, despite the defeat, and there’s now no reason for him to not start again against Manchester United. Dyche lasted longer than most fans with his patience with the striker.
