NFL championship round picks: Consider Bills and Eagles this weekend

Lorenzo Reyes is back with his best bet for the AFC and NFC championship games. He also threw in a couple of bonus player prop bets for those interested.

PHILADELPHIA − The Eagles are very familiar with the Washington Commanders, the opponent standing in their way for a second trip to the Super Bowl in three seasons.

The two are NFC East rivals, having split the season series. The Eagles won 26-18 in the first meeting on Nov. 18 while the Commanders won the rematch 36-33 on Dec. 22.

"In a game where you're playing someone for the third time, of course you look at the things you've done against them, what they've done against you, what was successful, all those different things," Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. "So that's definitely part of our process any time we play a team year to year or multiple times in a year."

This is just the fifth matchup between NFC East foes in the conference championship game, but first in 38 years when the Giants beat Washington. The Eagles were involved in one of those games, beating the Cowboys in 1980.

Here's how this year's NFC Championship game is going:

The Eagles were on the verge of putting the game away on Jalen Hurts' tush push touchdown, his third rushing TD of the game. Zack Baun recovered Austin Ekeler's fumble at the Eagles' 49. Eventually, Saquon Barkley ran 22 yards down to the Commanders' 1.

The Eagles lined up in tush push formation. Washington jumped offside four times, twice on dives over the top by Frankie Luvu. Eventually, the referee warned "Washington is being advised that at some point ... (Eagles) will be rewarded a score."

Hurts then scored without penalty. The Eagles led 41-23 with 12:24 left.

As if there was any doubt, Jalen Hurts showed he can run on his injured left knee, running left to score from 9 yards out, giving the Eagles a 34-15 lead with 8:58 left in the third quarter. Hurts set up the TD with passes of 16 yards to A.J. Brown, then 7 and 26 yards to Dallas Goedert.

Hurts did it with Cam Jurgens at center, despite a back injury. He started the second half because Landon Dickerson, who started in place of Jurgens, hurt his knee.

The Commanders answered with Jayden Daniels' 10-yard TD run and 2-point conversion, cutting Eagles lead to 34-23 with 5:01 left in the third quarter.

Jalen Hurts threw a 4-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds left in the first half, but the Commanders answered with a field goal with 2 seconds left. The Eagles led 27-15 at the break.

The Eagles' TD was set up when Jeremy McNichols fumbled on the kick return after Hurts' 1-yard touchdown on a tush push. Kenny Gainwell recovered as Washington's 24.

Saquon Barkley had 85 yards on 9 carries, including TD runs of 60 and 4 yards on his first two touches of the game.

Hurts, playing with a knee injury, wasn't really tasked with running, but he showed good enough speed on scrambles to keep Washington's defense from clamping on Barkley. Hurts was perfectly fine throwing, going 12-for-18 for 141 yards and a TD in the first half.

The 141 yards were more than Hurts' total passing yards in each of the previous two games.

Jayden Daniels had 139 yards passing and 31 yards rushing for Washington. Zane Gonzalez hit three field goals, the last with 2 seconds left in the half.

Washington had cut the Eagles' lead to 2 before the Eagles took over. They decided to go for it on 4th-and-5 from Washington's 45 with 2:14 left. It was a gutsy call, and Jalen Hurts went deep to A.J. Brown down the left side.

Brown caught the ball over Marshon Lattimore for 31 yards down to the 14. The Eagles faced a 3rd-and-13 from the 17 when Lattimore was called for pass interference on a ball intended for DeVonta Smith in the end zone, giving the Eagles a first down at the 1.

Hurts then scored on a tush push, but he stopped on the 2-point try after Lattimore's unnecessary roughness penalty. Still, the Eagles a 20-12 lead with 1:44 left.

SAQUON'S SCORES: See all of Saquon Barkley's touchdowns vs Commanders in NFC Championship game

Jayden Daniels' 36-yard TD pass to Terry McLaurin cut the Eagles' lead to 14-12 with 7:05 left in the second quarter after the two-point conversion failed. Daniels hit McLaurin on a slant, and he outran the defense to the end zone.

Jake Elliott's struggles from 50-plus yards continued as he missed from 54 yards. Elliott was 1-for-7 from that range during the regular season. That kept the score 14-6 Eagles with 8:49 left in the second quarter. The Commanders were able to get a field goal after executing a fake punt from their 31.

Punter Tress Way threw for 24 yards to Ben Sinnott, getting into Eagles' territory. Zane Gonzalez hit a 46-yard field goal.

Saquon Barkley didn't have to travel as far this time, taking an inside handoff from Jalen Hurts up the middle, before cutting to the right and getting to the pylon for a 4-yard TD run. That gave the Eagles a 14-3 lead with 3:43 left in the first quarter.

The drive was set up by Dyami Brown's fumble after a reception that Reed Blankenship recovered at the Commanders' 48. Hurts completed 3 passes to get the ball to the 4, where Barkley took over. Barkley has 2 carries, 64 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

The Eagles needed 17 fewer plays than Washington to score, as Saquon Barkley took a pitch from Jalen Hurts to the left. He broke a tackle, reversed field and scored. Just like that, the Eagles had a 7-3 lead. The Commanders needed 18 plays on their opening drive for a field goal.

Washington was 30th against the run during the season. The Eagles took advantage as Landon Dickerson started at center in place of Cam Jurgens, who has a back injury. Tyler Steen took Dickerson's spot at left guard.

Commanders open with 18-play drive, get FG

If Washington wanted to control the ball, the Commanders did a good job on their opening drive. But they settled for a field goal on an 18-play drive. They used up 7 minutes, 3 seconds. They also converted two fourth downs. But they decided on a 34-yard field goal instead of going for it on 4th-and-3 from the Eagles' 16.

Eagles center Cam Jurgens, listed as questionable with a back injury, is on the game-day roster. But that doesn't mean he's playing. Left guard Landon Dickerson was taking snaps at center during pregame warmups. If that remains, Tyler Steen would play left guard.

Nick Gates is the only other player on the roster with center experience, but he's on the inactive list.

The Eagles also listed QB Tanner McKee, CB Eli Ricks, DB Lewis Cine, OL Darian Kinnard, G Trevor Keegan and WR Ainias Smith as inactive.

2 veterans get practice-squad elevation

The Eagles announced Saturday that they elevated veterans in FB Khari Blasingame and LB Nicholas Morrow from the practice squad. In addition, the Eagles signed DE KJ Henry to the practice squad and released OL Cameron Erving from that squad.

Eagles vs Commanders prediction

When all else fails, the Eagles have Saquon Barkley while the Commanders are 30th against the run. But the biggest Barkley Neutralizer isn't the Commanders' defense as much as it is Hurts as a running threat with his knee injury. So as backward as it sounds, Hurts might have to pass the ball in order for Barkley to run. Hurts can, and will.

The pick: Eagles 27, Commanders 23
