EastEnders aired a special episode centred on Linda Carter's escalating alcohol addiction. In the latest visit to Walford on December 16, Linda (Kellie Bright) was faced with a choice between her family and alcohol, leading to a night of heavy drinking.
The episode, now available on iPlayer, features an unstable Linda grabbing a bottle of vodka, signalling she has no intention of battling her addiction despite pleas from her distraught mother Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe) to go to rehab.
In a shocking scene, Linda violently pushes Elaine onto her bed in front of her sons Johnny (Charlie Suff) and young Ollie (Harry Farr). Ollie confides in Johnny his fears about their mum leaving permanently like their dad Mick (Danny Dyer), indicating he is aware of Linda's alcohol problem.
Johnny attempts to comfort him, assuring him that Linda will come back improved after rehab, before later presenting his mother with a drawing Ollie made showing her drinking on the floor.
Manchester Evening News reports how Linda storms out of the Vic, clutching a bottle and Ollie's drawing.
Linda quickly finishes the entire bottle of vodka before the lights flicker and she stumbles off into the night. In a unique twist, the show combined Linda's death scenes and her subsequent funeral into one episode.
Following a frightening encounter with a homeless man, Linda violently throws up on the war memorial before experiencing difficulty breathing. Tragically, Linda then dies as a result of her drinking.
The police rocked up at The Queen Vic to drop a heart-shattering bombshell on Elaine about her daughter's untimely death. As Linda's send-off rolled around, Lee (Danny-Boy Hatchard) and Nancy Carter (Maddy Hill) turned up to wave a final goodbye to their once loving mum.
Johnny was knocking back the booze hard, just like his mum used to, totally snookered by the grim reality slapping him in the face. The Carter clan were soon at each other's throats, with Nancy swearing down she'd whisk Ollie and Annie away from the Square.
Elaine's left distraught in the boozer as the lights start flickering, mirroring her own broken heart. Then out of nowhere, we're thrown back to the beginning of Linda's final night as she stands there outside the pub, clasping the bottle of vodka after having a row with Elaine.
Quivering like a leaf, Linda gawks at Ollie's masterpiece and it hits her - time to chuck the booze away. She makes a beeline for the pub to have make-up with Elaine.
In floods of tears, Linda blurts out: "I don't want to be this person anymore". When Elaine gives her the third degree about what's got into her, Linda spills the beans: "I saw it all, Mum... what would happen if I don't stop.
"It's like someone slapped me round the face and you're right, the drink is going to kill me, and when I die, everyone's going to hate me."
Viewers of EastEnders were over the moon with the belter of an episode, but some couldn't help getting side-tracked by Ollie's doodle.
Hopping onto X, one viewer couldn't hold back: "The way I actually scream cackled when I saw this", chucking in a bunch of laugh-crying emojis for good measure.
Fans were quick with the remote, one penning: "I had to rewind it a few times because what", and another couldn't help but share, "I did laugh when I seen it too! ".
Viewers were totally here for it, with comments like "I'm cryingggg, Olly isn't playing about man" popping up, while another fan posted: "I died at this bit."
