May 13th marks Eid-Al-Fitr, a day of celebration for Muslims all over the world and the end of the month of fasting, which is known as Ramadan.

The name “Eid al-Fitr” translates as “the festival of the breaking of the fast.”

Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam- these are five principles which Muslims believe are compulsory acts ordered by God.

Eid al-Fitr is the first out of two Eids during the year, the second of which is called Eid-Ul-Adha.

What do you say when someone says Eid Mubarak?

During Eid, you are likely to hear Muslims using the greeting “Eid Mubarak” with each other.

This translates to “blessed feast,” or “blessed festival,” and is the standard way to wish something a happy Eid.

If someone tells you “Eid Mubarak” a polite response would either be to say it back, or to reply with “Khair Mubarak.”

This wishes good will on the person who greeted you. Another response would be “JazakAllah Khair” which means thank you, but translates as “May Allah reward you with goodness.”

What is Eid?

Eid-Al-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking Fast” is celebrated after the month of fasting, known as Ramadan. It is the first of two Eids in the Islamic calendar.

During the Eid celebration, many Muslims will be attending Eid prayers at their mosque, early on 13th May. They will also exchange gifts and money, and enjoy large feasts with friends and family.

Maswood Ahmed, a member of the Muslim Council of Britain, explains:

“Eid is a time of celebration after accomplishing one of the most important religious duties: fasting during the month of Ramadan.”

The second Eid is Eid-Ul-Adha, which is also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice.”

It is typically celebrated two months after Eid-Al-Fitr and it marks the completion of Hajj, The Muslim Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca.
