A shocking first day for England and Joe Root, his team bowled out for 147 with Pat Cummins taking the first round of the battle of the captains with five for 38.
A dreadful day started with Rory Burns bowled first ball of the series by Mitchell Starc.
Root lasted nine balls before making a duck, Ben Stokes scored five and Dawid Malan just six, as four of the top five made single-figure scores.
Ashes debutants Haseeb Hameed (25) and Ollie Pope (35) fought their way to lunch but the afternoon belonged to Australia, grabbing six wickets for 88.
Jos Buttler counter-attacked to top score with 39 but Cummins took the last three wickets, holding the ball up to the crowd as he led his team off after a dream start to his captaincy.
