India v England: First Test LIVE Day One in Hyderabad with ...
India 110-1 (Jaiswal 73, Gill 8) England 246 Overs: 21
Jaiswal lays down a marker ahead of day two, showing off his dancing feet and smoking Rehan back over his head for a huge six off the last ball of what had been a decent over.
India 103-1 (Jaiswal 67, Gill 7) England 246 Overs: 20
Leach is bowling really nicely here, and goes for just two singles off the over as India play him out.
India 101-1 (Jaiswal 66, Gill 6) England 246 Overs: 19
Rehan is introduced into the attack for the first time today as England look to pick up a second wicket in these final few overs of the day.
The leg-spinner is a real talent but raw, and his first over is a bit of all sorts, with lots of turn and a big appeal for an lbw shout that was well outside the line. There’s no reviews left of course.
He’s crunched for a lovely driven four by Jaiswal that brings up India’s 100, and wipes his hands before heading back to his fielding position.
India 94-1 (Jaiswal 60, Gill 5) England 246 Overs: 18
Hartley rolls his arm over for a ninth time in what has been a tricky start to his Test career. Stokes is sticking by his debutant though, keeping the field up.
A couple of drinks and a towel come out for India, who are trying to get through to close nice and safely.
India 87-1 (Jaiswal 55, Gill 3) England 246 Overs: 17
Gill didn’t get the memo about all-out attack and has really given himself some time to get in. We’re not long from the close of play mind, so it’s a sensible approach from a youngster who could have sat out this game had Kohli been available.
Leach gets through another maiden.
India 87-1 (Jaiswal 55, Gill 3) England 246 Overs: 16
Hartley has overstepped again and it’s a no-ball. It’s been a tough spell for the left-armer, but Stokes is giving him a good run and a chance to get into the Test and series. We’ve yet to see Rehan or Root with the ball in hand.
It’s a decent rest of the over from Hartley though.
India 84-1 (Jaiswal 54, Gill 2) England 246 Overs: 15
Tidy from Leach, who sends down a maiden.
India 84-1 (Jaiswal 54, Gill 2) England 246 Overs: 14
England make a big appeal as Hartley gets one to turn and bounce. There’s just one review left, but Stokes goes for it anyway, with the lbw and caught behind both potentially in play. There’s no edge according to ultraedge, but is it lbw? No. DRS says it’s bouncing over and England lose the review, which is really quite unlucky in this case. Stokes rolls his eyes and Hartley clutches his head – they can’t believe that bounced so much.
But the result is that the innings is 13 overs old and England have no reviews remaining. Not ideal.
WICKET! India 82-1 (Jaiswal 53, Gill 1) England 246 Overs: 13
Rohit Sharma caught Ben Stokes bowled Jack Leach for 24 (27b)
England needed that! Rohit goes after Leach and he sends the ball straight up, with Stokes holding on to the catch.
That’s the fifth time that Leach has dismissed Rohit in Test cricket, and the skipper goes for 24 from 27, punching his bat in frustration at that shot as he departs.
Can England take advantage of the breakthrough and stem the flow of runs?
Gill is in at number three.
FIFTY! India 80-0 (Jaiswal 52, Rohit 24) England 246 Overs: 12
Jaiswal slams a short ball from Hartley to the fence to bring up his half-century in some style, reaching the milestone in just 47 deliveries.
England need something to stem the flow of runs and review after an appeal for a possible catch behind. It turned a lot and was very close to Rohir’s edge, but did it make contact? No it didn’t. The India captain survives and England have lost another review. They have just one remaining.
Hartley’s day gets a little bit worse as he oversteps for a no-ball. It’s been a tough introduction to the Test game for him today.
India 73-0 (Jaiswal 47, Rohit 23) England 246 Overs: 11
Jaiswal is relentless, smashing Leach for another four to move within one hit of his half-century.
It’s been a remarkable start from India, more akin to a T20 than a Test match.
India 68-0 (Jaiswal 42, Rohit 23) England 246 Overs: 10
Hartley continues, and you have to give it to Stokes, he certainly stands by his players when they’re under pressure.
Unfortunately the runs keep flowing from his left-arm darts, although he does get one to climb on Rohit and cause the India skipper some problems, which doesn’t happen often.
India 63-0 (Jaiswal 41, Rohit 19) England 246 Overs: 9
India’s openers are doing a terrific job here, eating into the deficit and setting a platform to get a decent first-innings lead.
Sharma gets in on the boundary-hitting action, cutting away for four. He’s had much less of the strike, has the India skipper, but he’s actually scoring at an even faster rate than Jaiswal so far.
India 56-0 (Jaiswal 40, Rohit 13) England 246 Overs: 8
England give Hartley another over and a chance to find some sort of confidence, and the over doesn’t start in the best fashion as the ball races away to the rope.
But Hartley finds some nice areas as the over unfolds, getting the ball to spit out of the rough and giving Jaiswal something to think about.
India 51-0 (Jaiswal 35, Rohit 13) England 246 Overs: 7
Leach is looking in decent nick, but a single off his bowling sees India bring up their 50 after just 39 deliveries.
It’s a breathless start to the innings, spearheaded by the brutal hitting of Jaiswal.
India 48-0 (Jaiswal 33, Rohit 12) England 246 Overs: 6
Hartley’s having a tough time out there and is driven for another four by Jaiswal, who smells blood in the water.
Rohit gets in on the gap, whipping one away for another four, meaning that Hartley has gone for 34 runs from his first three overs in Test cricket.
India 39-0 (Jaiswal 28, Rohit 8) England 246 Overs: 5
England have given Wood his early burst, but decide that two overs is enough, with not much swing on offer. Leach is into the attack early, with catchers around the bat.
It’s a tidy first over from England’s most experienced spinner.
India 35-0 (Jaiswal 27, Rohit 5) England 246 Overs: 4
India aren’t letting Hartley settle on his debut and Jaiswal hits him for two fours in the over, the first a pull to deep square and the second a drive through extra cover.
India are racing along at almost nine-an-over.

India 22-0 (Jaiswal 18, Rohit 1) England 246 Overs: 3
Foakes will be hearing about this one again! He loses his bearings slightly as he tries to take a catch from the deep and runs straight over the stumps, going tumbling in the process. His own teammates can barely hide their laughter as the stumps lay flat on the ground.
England appeal for a possible edge down leg and Stokes reviews, but there’s nothing on ultraedge and Jaiswal survives.
Wood is really straining to get everything he can out of this new-ball spell and fizzes two bouncers past the face of Jaiswal that are called as wides, slightly harshly I’d say.
India 19-0 (Jaiswal 18, Rohit 0) England 246 Overs: 2
Hartley takes the new ball on his England debut. The tall left-armer has been billed as England’s answer to Axar – no pressure then!
These openers have no intention on allowing England’s inexperienced spinners to settle, and Jaiswal lines up the first ball and swings it away for a huge six, taking advantage of a bit of a loosener and the field being up.
Stokes keeps the field up to tempt Jaiswal into going after it again, and he duly does, launching a sweep into the stands for a second six of the over.
Bazball eat your heart out!
India 7-0 (Jaiswal 6, Rohit 0) England 246 Overs: 1
Mark Wood takes the new ball and goes searching for wick
ets early, getting some swing at high pace. The first delivery is a little loose though and Jaiswal whips it through leg for a four that gets the fans off their seats.
Wood swings one onto the pads off the last ball of the over and appeals, but that looked a bit wrong and England opt against the review.
Innings Break – England all out for 246
Is this a competitive score? Time will tell, but 246 all out after winning the toss feels a bit short, even on a pitch that is taking turn on day one.
Ben Stokes was the only player to reach a half-century, falling as the final wicket for 70 from 88 balls that featured some big hits late on in his knock.
But there were plenty of other batters who got starts. Crawley (20) and Duckett (35) started brightly against the seam, while Root (29) and Bairstow (37) looked settled in a decent partnership. Rehan (13), Hartley (23) and Wood (11) all contributed late on to help England from 137-6 up to a total that gives them a sniff.
The brilliant Bumrah picked up two wickets late on, but all the other dismissals came against spin. Ashwin took 3-68 from 21 overs, Jadeja 3-88 from 18, and Axar 2-33 from 13, as the spin trio made hay on a first-day pitch that turned plenty.
Siraj was the only bowler not to take a wicket, sending down just four expensive overs, going for 28 runs. Those returns suggest that England maybe got their balance right in picking just the one quick. We’ll find out shortly.
WICKET! England 246 all out Overs: 64.3
Ben Stokes bowled Jasprit Bumrah for 70 (88b)
Stokes gets a bit lucky at the start of the over as a beauty of an off-cutter from Bumrah rises from a length and catches the edge, only for the ball to perfectly bisect the gap between keeper and first slip to run away for four.
It’s clear that Stokes is not taking singles any more, looking for the big shots. But Bumrah is just too good in this situation and he gets the final wicket, cleaning Stokes up with a full and straight one that cracks into the top of middle.
England are all out for 246, with Stokes top-scoring with that defiant 70.
England 242-9 (Stokes 66, Leach 0) Overs: 64
This is real entertainment.
Stokes lines one up and crunches Ashwin back down the ground for a beautiful straight six.
And he survives a stumping scare later in the over, just managing to keep his toe down as he lunges at a ball, misses it, and topples forward.
Ashwin adds to the drama by not going through with his action from the next delivery and giving a glance at Leach at the non-striker’s end, just to remind him to stay in his crease.
But Stokes gets the single off the last ball of the over to keep the strike.
England 235-9 (Stokes 59, Leach 0) Overs: 63
India have eight fielders on the rope as Stokes looks to tee off against Bumrah. There are easier bowlers to tee off against, that’s for sure, and India’s pace-bowling star keeps things tight with a lovely over.
India opt against bringing the field up for the final ball and Stokes knocks a full toss for a single to keep the strike.
WICKET! England 234-9 (Stokes 58, Leach 0) Overs: 62
Mark Wood bowled Ravichandran Ashwin for 11 (24b)
Ashwin thinks he has Wood lbw, but the review isn’t a good one, with the ball pitching outside leg.
But Wood falls to the very next delivery, missing with a big sweep as Ashwin rattles the stumps.
Jack Leach is in at 11 for England. Can he help Stokes build a big last-wicket partnership? Something reminds me that we’ve seen these two do that before…
FIFTY! England 233-8 (Stokes 57, Wood 11) Overs: 61
Stokes is in full flow now. He tees off and slams a huge six off Jadeja to bring up his 50.
His half century came from 69 balls, with that six to reach the milestone being his first maximum.
And he follows it up with a pull that goes all the way for another six. Brutal hitting and England are moving towards a total that could give them something to work with in this match.
England 220-8 (Stokes 44, Wood 11) Overs: 60
Ashwin resumes after the break and gets a big edge off Stokes, but the ball loops up and drops safely away from Rohit at slip.
Wood frees his arms and slams a fiery four to finish the over. England won’t hang about in this final session.

TEA: England 215-8 (Stokes 43, Wood 2) Overs: 59
Jadeja finishes the session with a maiden and it’s time for the tea interval.
The afternoon has certainly belonged to India, with five wickets falling in the session, four of them to spin, with Axar Patel removing Jonny Bairstow (37) and Ben Foakes (4), and Ravindra Jadeja getting Joe Root (29) and Tom Hartley (23).
There was a peach of a slower-ball dismissal in there from Jasprit Bumrah to get Rehan Ahmed (13), which is the only wicket to fall to seam so far in the innings.
In fact, of the 59 overs bowled, just 11 have been by the quick pair. That tells you what sort of surface this is, and England’s spin trio will be keen to have a crack on such a turning track.
England 215-8 (Stokes 43, Wood 7) Overs: 58
Wood joins in the fun, slamming Ashwin for four as the runs keep on coming. This sort of flurry is at least giving England’s bowlers something to work with – we won’t know what a par score is until we’ve seen India have a bat on this wicket.
England 210-8 (Stokes 43, Wood 2) Overs: 57
India have two reviews left so have a crack as Jadeja appeals for lbw against Stokes. Rohit didn’t look confident at all, and replays show why – that took a hefty inside edge onto the pads. The not out decision stands.
And Stokes responds next ball by dancing down the track and rifling a drive to the rope.
That brings up the 200 for England, and he swings the next ball away to the boundary too, not quite connecting with a pull shot but finding the gap.
And another peach of a reverse-sweep races away for four off the bat of Stokes to finish the over in style.
The strains of the Barmy Army’s trumpeter ring around Hyderabad as 14 runs come from Jadeja’s over.
England 196-8 (Stokes 28, Wood 1) Overs: 56
Mark Wood is in at ten for England and you’d expect his arrival to see Stokes go into even more attacking mode.
Ashwin is the hardest bowler to get away though, and he gets through a tidy over.
WICKET! England 193-8 (Stokes 28) Overs: 55
Tom Hartley bowled Ravindra Jadeja for 23 (24b)
Stokes goes after Jadeja again with a switch-hit sweep that runs away to the boundary off the first ball of the over. It’s been a real shift in momentum in the last ten minutes, with this partnership striking at a run-a-ball and giving India something to think about.
But that attacking approach has risks, and Hartley hangs his head as Jadeja whips one back through the gate to rattle the stumps with a big turning delivery.
England 184-7 (Stokes 22, Hartley 20) Overs: 54
Hartley is looking very keen to take on Ashwin and the trumpets sound as he slams England’s first six of the innings, getting underneath a sweep that flies all the way.
Ten come off that over as England put their foot down. It’s a pitch that isn’t easy to stick around on, so why not? That’s the Bazball way.
England 174-7 (Stokes 21, Hartley 11) Overs: 53
Bumrah’s short and sharp spell is over as Jadeja comes back into the attack, and England look to take a more aggressive approach immediately.
Hartley picks up a streaky boundary off the first ball of the over, and a reverse sweep to the rope from Stokes gives the England captain his first boundary of a knock that has lasted 54 balls so far.
Nine come from the over as England visibly shift approach.
England 165-7 (Stokes 17, Hartley 6) Overs: 52
Ashwin is bowling beautifully here, and looks on with a wry smile as Hartley hacks at the last ball of the over to pick up a ragged single and keep the strike.
His limited time in the county game has shown that Hartley can certainly bat, but he won’t have faced anything quite as challenging as this.
England 164-7 (Stokes 17, Hartley 5) Overs: 51
Jadeja shows off his quality in the field to save a boundary as Stokes has a crack at a wide one from Bumrah and cuts away through cover.
England 160-7 (Stokes 14, Hartley 4) Overs: 50
Hartley isn’t going to sit and wait to get out, and he goes on the attack against Ashwin, hammering one across the clear for four through mid-on.
Stokes applauds the intent, and England will be looking for more of those sort of shots to get them up to a score that at least keeps them in the game.

WICKET! England 155-7 (Stokes 13, Hartley 0) Overs: 49
Rehan Ahmed caught KS Bharat bowled Jasprit Bumrah for 13 (18b)
The decision to bring back Bumrah pays off as Rehan flaps at a clever slower ball and edges through to the keeper.
It’s a good catch from Bharat too, as the ball died on him a tad. Tom Hartley on Test debut is the new batter.
India are well on top here, and have been ever since that double-wicket burst that broke the settled Root-Bairstow partnership.
England 154-6 (Stokes 12, Rehan 13) Overs: 48
Rehan goes on the attack, coming down to a lofted delivery from Ashwin and chipping a drive over the top that just evades the fielder at mid-on and runs away for a boundary.
England 150-6 (Stokes 12, Rehan 9) Overs: 47
Time for a spot of pace, with Bumrah eyeing up those England lower-order batters.
He is straight on the money, as expected, getting an edge from Stokes that slides away for a single.
But an overthrow gifts England five off the last ball of the over, which is a welcome boost and takes England up to 150.
Initially that was recorded as six off the last ball, but replays show the batters hadn’t crossed before the throw so it’s cut to five runs.
England 144-6 (Stokes 11, Rehan 4) Overs: 46
It’s a trial by spin and so far England are not passing the Test. 142-6 is far from where Stokes would have wanted to be after winning the toss and opting to bat first. But this is a pitch that is turning on day one, so you never know.
Ashwin takes the ball after drinks and goes for two singles from the over.
England 142-6 (Stokes 10, Rehan 3) Overs: 45
Axar rattles through another over with England watchful for now.
It’s time for drinks after an hour’s play that has certainly gone India’s way, with the scalps of Bairstow, Root and Foakes leaving England in a spot of bother on this first day.
England 140-6 (Stokes 9, Rehan 2) Overs: 44
Rehan can bat, but England are into their tail now. It will be interesting to see how they go about it – will Stokes play conventionally while Rehan is out with him? Or are we about to see an attacking flurry?
Rehan steers the final ball of Ashwin’s over away for a couple to get off the mark.
WICKET! England 137-6 (Stokes 8, Rehan 0) Overs: 43
Ben Foakes caught KS Bharat bowled Axar Patel for 4 (24b)
One thing you do get with a spin-heavy approach is a fast over rate, and we’re really rattling through it at the moment.
And the pressure of the spin barrage tells for Foakes, who reaches for a ball that turns off straight from Axar and edges through to the keeper.
Rehan Ahmed is the new batter and he plays out the final ball of the over.
Six down at this stage is not what England would have wanted after winning the toss, but the wicket is turning so we won’t know exactly how under-par this is until both teams have batted. It’s a cliché but it’s true.
England 137-5 (Stokes 8, Foakes 4) Overs: 42
Ashwin cracks Stokes on the pads with the final ball of another tight over, but it was sliding down and the umpire isn’t interested. Neither is Rohit in taking the review, and replays show that was a wise call.
England 135-5 (Stokes 7, Foakes 3) Overs: 41
It’s consolidation time for England, as Foakes and Stokes nudge a couple of singles off Axar. There’s a scare for Foakes as a shy at the stump from one of the close fielders has him scrambling for his ground, but he’s back safely.
England 133-5 (Stokes 6, Foakes 2) Overs: 40
There’s a swell in noise from the crowd as Ashwin takes the ball for the first time since lunch. He picked up 2-20 in that first session and was the pick of the bowlers, and he’ll fancy having a go at the left-handed Stokes in particular.
He starts with a maiden.
England 133-5 (Stokes 6, Foakes 2) Overs: 39
The England pair successfully negotiate another Axar over and it looks like we’re set for a bit of Ashwin, who is loosening up.
England 131-5 (Stokes 5, Foakes 1) Overs: 38
Jadeja is getting the ball to talk, but gets away with a first loose delivery for some time as Stokes heaves towards a drag down but fails to make contact.
It’s rebuild time now for this pair.
England 128-5 (Stokes 4, Foakes 0) Overs: 37
Axar continues and the close fielders are in now after those two quick wickets. The pressure is on Stokes and Foakes.
WICKET! England 125-5 (Stokes 1, Foakes) Overs: 36
Joe Root caught Jasprit Bumrah bowled Ravindra Jadeja for 29 (60b)
That’s the scalp that India wanted.
Root looks to sweep Jadeja and an only top edge straight to Bumrah for a simple catch. That’s a huge breakthrough, and in comes Foakes at number seven for England.
This is a bit of a perilous situation for England – five down on the first afternoon and a long way from a decent first-innings score.
England 125-4 (Root 29, Stokes 1) Overs: 35
Stokes is off the mark as Axar gets through another over, keeping these two pinned in a little. It’s been really tight bowling since the break.
England 123-4 (Root 28, Stokes 0) Overs: 34
Jadeja continues and gets some big spin, with the third ball of the over puffing off the surface and jagging a long way past the bat. That’s quite some turn for a first-day pitch, but also what both teams clearly expected from the team selections.
WICKET! England 121-4 (Root 26, Stokes 0) Overs: 33
Jonny Bairstow bowled Axar Patel for 37 (58b)
Bairstow sprawls into his ground after dashing for a quick single, and there’s a brief pause as the keeper Bharat receives some treatment after being struck on the shoulder.
And Axar gets his man very next ball, with Bairstow not reading it and defending down the wrong line as the ball crashes into off stump. Bairstow departs for 37 and England are four down.
Captain Stokes sees out the final two deliveries of the over.

England 118-3 (Root 23, Bairstow 37) Overs: 32
It’s a maiden for Jadeja as he cranks up the pressure on Bairstow, hurrying the batter on a couple of occasions.
England 118-3 (Root 23, Bairstow 37) Overs: 31
Axar continues and England keep things ticking over with the singles.
England 116-3 (Root 22, Bairstow 36) Overs: 30
Rotating the strike is a big strength of Joe Root’s in these conditions, and he works with Bairstow to take four more singles off Jadeja’s first over after the interval.
This start to the session has pushed the close fielders back.
England 112-3 (Root 20, Bairstow 34) Overs: 29
Axar takes the first over after lunch and England get rolling, taking four singles from the over to bring up the 50 partnership between these two.
06:43 – The story of the first session
England won the toss and opted to bat first in Hyderabad.
They got off to a flier too, with the openers rattling along against the seamers, hitting Siraj for 28 off his four overs and putting together a quickfire 50 partnership.
But a pitch that was expected to spin has spun, with three wickets falling to the turning ball on the first morning.
Duckett (35 from 39) was the first to go, pinned lbw by Ashwin.
And Pope (1 from 11) didn’t last long, edging Jadeja to Sharma at slip.
Crawley (20 from 40) became Ashwin’s second victim when he slices a low catch to Siraj, meaning three wickets had fallen for just five runs.
But Root (18*) and Bairstow (32*) have steadied the ship and will resume with England at 108/3.
06:40 – A reminder of the India XI
Virat Kohli’s withdrawal from the start of the series for personal reasons meant that the make of India’s top order became pretty straightforward, with KL Rahul able to play as a specialist batter and Srikar Bharat taking the gloves.
Captain Rohit Sharma did say that the decision of which spinner to leave out was a tricky one for the selectors, but they have opted for Patel along with Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in a three-pronged spin attack.
That XI is:
Rohit, Jaiswal, Rahul, Gill, Iyer Jadeja, Bharat, Axar, Ashwin, Siraj, Bumrah
06:35 – A reminder of the England XI
England sprung a bit of a surprise by picking three front-line spinners and just one quick bowler in Mark Wood for this Test, which is an almighty but brave gamble – the latest aggressive selection move of the Bazball era.
The absence of Harry Brook for personal reasons made the make-up of the rest of the team pretty straightforward, with Ben Foakes taking the gloves and Jonny Bairstow playing as a specialist batter.
So that XI is:
Duckett, Crawley, Pope, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes, Hartley, Ahmed, Leach, Wood.
06:30 – Hello and Welcome
Good morning, and welcome to live coverage of the first Test of the much-anticipated series between India and England in Hyderabad.
We’ll pick up with over-by-over coverage when play resumes in the second session, which is due to start in around ten minutes’ time.
