India started the second day where they left off the first, piling on the runs while England continued to toil in the field in search of wickets.
The hosts started the day on 119 for one, 127 runs behind the visitors’ first-innings total. On the morning of the second day, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had dominated on the first day, and resumed on 70 from 76, was caught out in the first over by Joe Root.
England then claimed the wicket of Shubman Gill, but KL Rahul survived an early scare when he was on zero and went on to make 86, before miss-timing the ball straight to deep midwicket.
On the first day, England struggled to take wickets after being bowled out for 246, while Jaiswal dominated, hitting 76 from just 70 deliveries as India hit 119-1 in reply, in just 23 overs.
England were dealt a blow shortly before the first Test when Harry Brook returned home for personal reasons, although they will be buoyed with the news that Virat Kohli was also ruled out of the first two Tests for personal reasons.

Tea: India 309-5
There was a lot of hope at the start of the session when Shreyas and KL Rahul holed out to deep midwicket, but Jadeja dug in and is closing in on his half century.
England have struggled for consistency as well as finding wicket-taking deliveries.
Ben Stokes has continued to rotate his bowling options, but there is not enough consistency to build pressure, and even the wickets came from deliveries that arguably should have been punished and they were out due to batter error rather than bowling prowess.

Tea: India 309-5 (76) Jadeja 45, Bharat 9, Rehan 1-77 (15)
But after that Jadeja pulls away a four, just helped it around the corner from the first ball of Rehan Ahmed’s over.
Bharat has still not fully settled into this, and looks a bit uncomfortable as one turns around his outside edge and another bounces up.

India 304-5 (75) Jadeja 40, Bharat 9, Root 1-37 (11) - lead by 58
Root has bowled a maiden, could this be the sign of pressure starting to build?

India 304-5 (73) Jadeja 40, Bharat 9, Rehan 1-72 (14) - lead by 58
Wood has done enough apparently and England turn to Rehan Ahmed.
A maiden from Rehan.

India 304-5 (73) Jadeja 40, Bharat 9, Root 1-37 (10) - lead by 58
Root is into his 10th over, and has probably been England’s second-best spinner in this match so far.
They’ve even tried the Broad bail-switch and it has not brought the rewards.
Just one run from the over.

India 303-5 (72) Jadeja 39, Bharat 9, Wood 0-35 (9) - lead by 57
Wood might just be getting some reverse swing, and has found his rhythm. Bharat is not looking especially comfortable.
Three runs from the over. Eight overs until the new ball.

India 300-5 (71) Jadeja 37, Bharat 8, Root 1-36 (9) - lead by 54
England are rattling through the bowling options, Root is back on.
Leach has just dived onto the ground after diving forward to try and grab a catch, it bounced up and hit him uncomfortably.
The 300 is up for India.
England are up and celebrating a looped catch, but they have no reviews and the umpire’s finger was unmoved.

India 298-5 (70) Jadeja 36, Bharat 7, Wood 0-32 (8) - lead by 52 runs
Wood is up at 144 kph, but it’s a slow pitch and Jadeja gets off strike with a single.
Three runs from the over.
