The match then moved into extra-time, where both teams played cautiously, unable to break the deadlock. The contest was eventually decided by penalties, where England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a crucial save against Manuel Akanji‘s attempt. England’s perfect record in the shootout, with successful penalties from Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, secured their place in the semi-finals.

England will next face the Netherlands, who mounted a comeback to defeat Türkiye 2-1 in their quarter-final match. Samet Akaydin put Türkiye ahead in the 35th minute, and for much of the match, it seemed their impressive tournament run might continue. However, a rapid turnaround in the second half saw Stefan de Vrij and a Mert Müldür own goal shift the game in favour of the Netherlands.

Despite increased pressure from Türkiye, the Netherlands held firm and secured their spot in the semi-finals, where they will meet England. This highly anticipated match is scheduled for Thursday, July 11, at 5am (AEST), and will be broadcast live and exclusively on Optus Sport.
