London mayor Sadiq Khan is hosting a free screening of the Euro 2024 final between England and Spain at the O2 on Sunday – with tickets being made available at 10am on Thursday morning.

Gareth Southgate’s side got through a nail-biting semi final against the Netherlands on Wednesday evening, with Ollie Watkins’ inch-perfect strike in the 90th minute securing a 2-1 victory in Dortmund.

England’s men will now be looking to win their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup final, held at Wembley. Southgate’s team got to the final in the last European Championships – a match also held at the national stadium – but lost to Italy on penalties.

Up to 15,000 fans will now be invited to the O2 on Sunday evening to enjoy pre-match entertainment and what City Hall hopes will be “the biggest celebration of the Three Lions this side of Berlin”.

Tickets will be allocated via a ballot on City Hall’s website, opening at 10am on Thursday and closing on Friday at 9am. Successful entrants will be notified via email by midday on Friday to secure up to four tickets.

The ballot will be at london.gov.uk/eurosfinal.

Khan, a Liverpool fan, said: “I’m delighted that we can now invite 15,000 England fans to the O2 on Sunday night for what we all hope will be a night of great drama and celebration.

“For those who can’t make it to The O2, there will be a plethora of pubs, clubs, bars and other hospitality venues across London receiving a welcome economic boost and generating a fantastic atmosphere by showing the match.

“We all recall the heartache of Wembley three years ago but being a football fan requires eternal optimism and we now stand ready once again to roar on the Three Lions as they look to finish the job against Spain. Come on England!”

Steve Sayer, the O2’s general manager, said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming England fans to The O2 this Sunday to cheer on the Three Lions.

“It’s going to be an incredible atmosphere with up to 15,000 fans in the arena, and hopefully a memorable night of celebrations. It’s coming home!”

Wednesday night’s match was also shown at the O2 before The Killers’ show – with the final whistle leading into the band playing Mr Brightside.
