Liverpool struck twice in eight second-half minutes to win at Arsenal and move to within a point of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

With City held to a goalless draw at Crystal Palace on Monday night, Liverpool took full advantage, winning their game in hand 2-0 as Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino scored the goals.

The pair have history against the Gunners – this was Jota’s seventh goal in as many appearances against Arsenal for Liverpool, while Firmino now has nine goals against them, his best return against a single opponent.

The meeting between City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on April 10 will now go a huge way to deciding whether Pep Guardiola’s side will retain their crown or the Reds make it two titles in three years.

Liverpool close to within a point of Manchester City with victory over Arsenal

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson spoke to Sky Sports after the game and said that his team could have played better but were the more clinical side in front of goal. He said:

It’s as you were, and yet a show of how you seize a moment.

Liverpool keep winning, this 2-0 victory making it nine in a row in the Premier League, to also keep the initiative in this title race. Arsenal again fail to beat one of the elite sides.

There’s no harm in that given the quality of the opposition, and it doesn’t do much damage to their top-four chances, but the real pain will come from knowing how close they were.

Martin Odegaard had a great chance to put Arsenal ahead and give them what would have been a deserved lead. Alisson Becker saved, however, and Diogo Jota surged up the other end. Aaron Ramsdale didn’t show anything like the assurance of the Brazilian.

As if to hammer home the point, there was then a moment of real desire from Andy Robertson. Arsenal had just managed to clear a goalmouth scramble, only for the wing-back to chase down a lost cause and effectively win the game. He squared for Roberto Firmino, who gloriously flicked the ball in.

Liverpool dig deep to beat Arsenal and move just one point behind Man City

Trent Alexander-Arnold (11), Mo Salah (10) and Andy Robertson (10) have all made 10+ assists in the Premier League this season, the first time a team has had three players do so since 2019-20, when the same three men also managed it for Liverpool.

As things stand Liverpool sit a point below Manchester City in second having now played the same number of games.

Arsenal remain in fourth, with two games in hand on Manchester United, who they lead by a point.

Tottenham are up to seventh just three points behind the Gunners with a game in hand on West Ham and Man Utd above them.

Despite not scoring in this fixture since 2018, Roberto Firmino has now scored nine goals against Arsenal in all competitions, more than versus any other opponent since joining Liverpool.

90+3 mins: Liverpool march on! They win their ninth league game in a row and move to within one point of leaders Manchester City. It was always going to be a difficult match for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and for 54 minutes they were up to the task. Diogo Jota’s opener changed the momentum of the game and Roberto Firmino’s second finished off the Gunners. They fought well to keep it down to two but Liverpool’s game management was too good for them to get back into the match.

90 mins: Curtis Jones replaces Thiago Alcantara for Liverpool and a few vital seconds are taken out of the game. There’s going to be three minutes of added time to play at the end of the game.

88 mins: Close! That was the chance! Liverpool defend a free kick into the box and try to move out quickly but Arsenal recover the ball. Granit Xhaka turns the ball back towards goal and slides a pass into the left side of the box for Martinelli. He opens up and angles a shot towards the far bottom corner. Alisson is beaten but the shot goes wide of the back post!

86 mins: Liverpool have dropped down the gears now and area allowing Arsenal time on the ball but the Gunners haven’t created much. The visitors are happy to defend and see out the match. It’s going to be a huge win for them if them get over the line. They’ll just be one point behind Manchester City at the top of the table.

83 mins: Thomas Partey is brought down inside Liverpool’s final third but the referee lets play go on. The ball is chipped over to Emile Smith Rowe who wins a throw in for the home side.

80 mins: 10 minutes to play at the Emirates Stadium and Liverpool are in complete control. Arsenal’s tempo has slowed right down and they’ve started to make simple mistakes.

Eddie Nketiah comes on to replace Alexandre Lacazette.

77 mins: Alexander-Arnold sends an outswinging corner into the box and picks out Van Dijk. He nods the ball down into the box where Gabriel boots the ball clear. Arsenal are just getting pushed back. They need a period on the ball, Liverpool are managing the game well.

74 mins: More reinforcements for Arsenal as Nicolas Pepe comes on to replac Bukayo Saka. Pepe should provide some fireworks if he’s allowed time on the ball. This could be an exciting final 15 minutes.

Cedric flicks a cross into the box from the right side looking for the substitute. Alisson comes off his line and punches the ball away but collides with Pepe who then gets flagged offside.

71 mins: Matip strides forward and receives the ball off Salah. He gives it to Firmino who has his pocket picked by Partey. Partey looks to bring the ball into the midfield but Firmino brings him down from behind and gives Arsenal a free kick.

68 mins: Mikel Arteta makes his first change as Martin Odegaard is replaced with Emile Smith Rowe. Odegaard’s had a quiet second half other than that one chance when he should have beaten Alisson. Can Arsenal’s leading goalscorer get them a foothold in the game?

65 mins: It’s a long way back for Arsenal now. They’re just been hit by a one-two combination from Liverpool and have to respond. Jurgen Klopp’s changes worked for him and now the visitors have a comfortable lead with which to play out the game. An Arsenal goal would keep things interesting though.

62 mins: Bang. bang! Liverpool have a second! Firmino starts the ball by bringing the ball into the box from the right. He pulls it back to Salah who has a shot blocked. The ball comes out to Robertson whose cross is defended as well. Saka looks to drive the ball up the pitch but Robertson nicks it off him and delivers a low pass into the six-yard box where Firmino gets to the ball ahead of Ramsdale and guides it into the back of the net!

60 mins: An hour played at the Emirates Stadium. Liverpool win a corner that gets nodded out to Mo Salah. He does well to control the bouncing ball but spoons his shot at goal well over the crossbar. Still it’s an early sighter at goal for the Liverpool substitute.

57 mins: Jurgen Klopp makes a double change with Luis Diaz and the goalscorer Diogo Jota coming off to be replaced with Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah.

Is there a way back into this game for Arsenal or will Klopp’s changes increase Liverpool’s lead?

54 mins: Jota beats Ramsdale at the near post and Liverpool have the lead! Huge goal for Liverpool. Thiago Alcantara threads the ball into the left side of the penalty area where Diogo Jota takes the ball away from Ben White. He cuts back inside and blasts one at the gap at the near post. Aaron Ramsdale dives to his right and gets a good chunk of the ball but can’t keep it out!

53 mins: Save! Joel Matip heads a clearance out to Thiago Alcantara who errs with a pass back to Alisson. He doesn’t stop Alexandre Lacazette and knocks it straight to the Arsenal captain. Lacazette lays the ball off to Martin Odegaard who shoots from just inside the area only for Alisson to stick out a hand and turn the ball over the crossbar!

51 mins: Oh stop it Gabriel Martinelli! He dribbles the ball around Trent Alexander-Arnold, nutmegs Jordan Henderson and takes the ball into the box before pulling it back into the middle. Alexandre Lacazette isn’t expecting his run to get that far and Andy Robertson intercepts the pass and boots it clear for the Reds.

48 mins: Disallowed goal! Sadio Mane takes up a position on the left but darts inside as Liverpool play the ball into Jordan Henderson. He threads it through the Arsenal defence where Mane collects it after running in behind. He carries the ball into the box and slots it home only to get flagged for offside in the build-up!

Kick off: No changes in personnel from either manager at half-time. Arsenal get the match restarted at the Emirates Stadium. It comes back to Aaron Ramsdale who pumps the ball long. Virgil van Dijk wins the initial header but sends it across to Cedric Soares. He dinks the ball into the box for Bukayo Saka who is caught offside.

Arsenal (5) vs Liverpool (8) on is be the first Premier League match between two sides on 5+ game winning runs in the competition since Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal in April 2009.

45 mins: Lacazette shoots from range but has his effort blocked and Liverpool counter-attack. Sadio Mane flies through the middle of the pitch and receives the ball from an aerial pass made by Alexander-Arnold. He’s put under pressure byt the Arsenal centre-backs and fires his effort over the crossbar.

There’s no added time and the teams go into the break on level terms.

42 mins: Cedric deals with an Alexander-Arnold cross and Liverpool win a corner. The right-back takes the set piece for Liverpool and swings the ball into the middle of the box. Gabriel wins it ino the air and Thiago’s header back into the penalty area gets cleared by the Gunners.

39 mins: Jurgen Klopp seems frustrated on the sidelines. He’s waving his arms around, huffing and puffing to himself. Arsenal are playing with a compact, solid shape when Liverpool have the ball and there aren’t many avenues into the penalty area for the visitors.

36 mins: Cedric Soares comes across the pitch and pokes the ball away from Sadio Mane who goes down looking for a free kick that doesn’t come.

Martinelli then breezes past Alexander-Arnold again but cutting inside the right-back and flicking the ball over to Saka on the right wing. The pass is too heavy though and bounces out of play.

33 mins: Lacazette does brilliantly to turn the ball around Matip and roll away from the defender. He gives it to Martinelli who slips a pass into the box for Odegaard. Odegaard tries to send it back to Lacazette - now in space on the left side of the area - but the pass it overhit and the attack dies down after Granit Xhaka boots one high and wide.

30 mins: Strange game this one. It’s being played at very fast tempo which feels exciting but there hasn’t actually been that much happening in it.

I don’t think Alisson has had to make a save and Aaron Ramsdale’s only made one so far.

26 mins: The referee is letting tackles go. Jota is taken out for Liverpool who respond through Robertson shouldering Saka to ground. Neither challenge warrants a free kick until the ball comes to Fabinho who gets sandwiched between Lacazette and Odegaard inside his own half. Then the whistle goes for a free kick much to the displeasure of the Arsenal players who had set off on a counter-attack.

23 mins: Granit Xhaka switches the play with a diagonal pass over to Bukayo Saka on the right side of the penalty area. He plays it back to Cedric Soares who’s encouraged to shoot by the Arsenal supporters. He does but pulls his effort wide of the nearest post!

20 mins: Robertson misplaces a pass across the pitch towards Sadio Mane and gives the ball straight to Aaron Ramsdale just inside the Arsenal box.

It’s been a fairly even opening 20 minutes here.

17 mins: Liverpool are looking to use the wide areas to get the ball into the box. Andy Robertson and Lus Diaz first combine on the left but find no joy so the ball is switched out to the right side. Jordan Henderson leaves it for Trent Alexander-Arnold who’s cross gets blocked and Thomas Partey completes the clearance.

14 mins: Aaron Ramsdale’s hoof down the pitch comes out to Bukayo Saka but Andy Robertson gets inbetween him and the ball and nods it safely back to Alisson in Liverpool’s goal.

Chance! Gabriel Martinelli makes a good run down the left wing and shimmies around Trent Alexander-Arnold. He slides a pass into the six-yard box but Alexandre Lacazette can’t quite get there before Andy Robertson clears the danger.

11 mins: Thomas Partey threads a fine pass out to Bukayo Saka on the right wing and the Arsenal forward drives towards the box. He takes on Van Dijk and manages to float a cross over to Gabriel Martinelli arriving on the opposite side of the pitch. Martinelli nods the ball back into the middle of the area but can’t find Alexandre Lacazette and Joel Matip manages to get the ball away.

8 mins: Odegaard presses high up the pitch and wins a round of applause from the home fans as he tracks the ball across Liverpool’s final third. The visitors manage to play it out from the back though and send it into Thiago Alcantara in midfield. He tries to chip the ball into the box for Diogo Jota but Ben White intercepts with a headed clearance.

5 mins: Martin Odegaard attempts to feed Bukayo Saka into the right side of the box but iunderhits his pass which allows Andy Robertson to take over possession. Odegaard attempts to recover the ball quickly and is penalised for a foul on the Liverpool left-back.

3 mins: Liverpool win the first corner of the game that Andy Robertson swings in towards Joel Matip. Matip’s header is deflected behind and the Reds can have another go from the opposite side.

Save! Trent Alexander-Arnold delivers the second set piece and perfectly picks out Virgil van Dijk. He runs onto a powerful header and nods it down to Aaron Ramsdale’s left but the goalkeeper manages to get across and turn it wide of the post.

Kick off: Jordan Henderson kicks off the match for Liverpool who fire a long ball up the pitch toward Diogo Jota. He wins it in the air and nods the ball into the box for Luis Diaz. Diaz is beaten to the ball by Ben White who clears the Arsenal lines.

Here come the players. They make their way out onto the pitch at the Emirates Stadium. This is a big game for Arsenal. They’re more than capable of taking points away from Liverpool tonight. Fingers crossed for plenty of goals.

Liverpool have kept three successive league clean sheets for the first time this season. They have scored 34 Premier League goals away from home, more than any other side in the top flight.

Only Liverpool have won more points than the Gunners in the last six matches. Arsenal are unbeaten in all eight of their midweek Premier League home fixtures under Mikel Arteta with five wins and three draws.

"It’s final after final after final that we play.” said Jurgen Klopp about challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title.

"We’re not 10 points ahead with 10 games to go. It’s in front of us, so attack it, chase it, go for it. It’s the only chance we have. The plan is to be as annoying as possible. We have to win our games, you know that, but we are very ambitious and determined to do great stuff.

"We have 10 games to play and there’s a few really tough ones. They are all tough. Can we win all 10 games? It doesn’t sound likely, but we will give it a try."

Liverpool have won eight Premier League games in a row for the first time since a run of 18 ended in February 2020. They have scored 21 goals and only conceded twice during their current winning streak.

Arsenal are looking to win six consecutive Premier League games for the first time since a run of seven under Unai Emery in 2018. Mikel Arteta’s side will also make it a fourth consecutive home victory in the league if they beat Liverpool this evening.

Jurgen Klopp turned off Manchester City’s match on Monday before the end, but not because of nerves, or any fan-style expectation that Pep Guardiola’s side would of course score.

He had his own life to get on with, and his own work to do. So he only watched 65 minutes. That was enough.

Klopp admitted he was “surprised” that Crystal Palace pulled off a 0-0 draw, but it didn’t really alter his mood. He is far more concerned with his Liverpool team to retain their focus.

It is one of the little twists ahead of a huge game at Arsenal, that could well represent a huge turn in both the title race and the chase for the Champions League places.

Arsenal face Liverpool litmus test in defining game for title and top four

Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta was asked in his pre-match press conference whether his side are currently playing the best they’ve played under the Spanish boss and he replied:

“I think with the level of consistency, throughout the games, I would say yes,

“We are playing better. We have a better understanding on what we want. We have confidence and belief, and an understanding with each other. Everything clicks better and quicker.”

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, says he only watched 65 minutes of Manchester City’s Premier draw with Crystal Palace on Mondya night and was surprised when he found out the results. When asked whether that drew raised the mood within his squad he replied:

"I watched City for exactly 65 minutes for analysis reasons, believe it or not. I don’t have time to watch them in real time.

"Palace did well, but so did City - they just didn’t finish situations off. For the last 30 minutes I didn’t watch, but I saw the result and was surprised.

"Does it help the mood? Why should it? We play Arsenal and we cannot count [on getting] points away at Arsenal now. It’s easy for you but it’s four points. We have to play this game. If we want to reach something in this Premier League and you’re not top then you need to win games and others need to drop [points]."

Arsenal have won just one of the last 18 meetings in all competitions with eight draws and nine defeats. They beat Liverpool 2-1 at home in July 2020.

The Gunners have failed to score in any of the last five meetings and Liverpool could win three consecutive away games against Arsenal for the first time.

This will be their third meeting of 2022 after Liverpool won the two-legged EFL Cup semi-final in January.

Bernardo Silva believes Manchester City are still best-placed to retain their Premier League crown despite a disappointing draw at Crystal Palace offering Liverpool hope.

City have been as many as 14 points clear of Liverpool this season, albeit skewed by the different number of matches played, but are now just four ahead of their closest challengers having also played a game more.

Pep Guardiola’s side failed to find a way past Palace on Monday night, having to settle for a 0-0 stalemate at Selhurst Park.

Bernardo Silva says Man City still better placed than Liverpool in title race

Mikel Arteta names an unchanged Arsenal team as the Gunners go searching for their sixth consecutive Premier League victory. Emile Smith Rowe starts on the bench again but there’s no place in the squad for Takehiro Tomiyasu who continues to recover from injury.

Jurgen Klopp makes two changes. Diogo Jota comes in to replace Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara takes Naby Keita’s spot in midfield. Salah starts on the bench after his foot injury against Brighton and may feature later in the game if needed.
