Fast & Furious 9 does a good job in solving its main mysteries (where's Jakob been all this time and how is Han alive?), but it still manages to leave a major unanswered question of its own.

After the opening flashback to the death of Dom (Vin Diesel) and Jakob's (John Cena) father, the movie cuts to Dom living the quiet life with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and little Brian. It's a peaceful life that's soon interrupted by the arrival of Tej (Ludacris), Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel).

They've come with an SOS transmission from Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell) who had been transporting the villainous Cipher (Charlize Theron). His plane got attacked by one of his agents who's gone rogue, seemingly as a mid-air rescue for Cipher, and he needs Dom's help.

It's later revealed that the rogue agent is Jakob and he wasn't rescuing Cipher, he just wanted her help to find Project Aries, the dangerous MacGuffin of F9.

But that's not the big mystery around this sequence as after the plane crashes in Montequinto (a fictional Central America republic), Mr Nobody is nowhere to be found. So is Mr Nobody actually dead or is he just in hiding?

There are some spoilers ahead for Fast & Furious 9, so look away now if you haven't seen the movie yet.

Dom initially refuses to help as "things change" and he's enjoying the farm life, but as we all expected, he changes his mind after he spots the classic Toretto necklace on the SOS transmission video that Mr Nobody sent.

When Dom, Letty, Roman, Tej and Ramsey arrive in Montequinto at the site of the plane crash, there's no sign of Mr Nobody (unless they just didn't want to show us his corpse) and all they find is half of Project Aries.

Jakob is after Project Aries too, so he soon arrives and a car chase over landmines and collapsing bridges ensues and Mr Nobody becomes an afterthought.

Ramsey finds some coordinates tied to the signal he sent which leads them to his secret base somewhere in the Caspian Sea. Again though, Mr Nobody is nowhere to be found and to be fair to Dom and co, they have a world to save and Jakob to stop, so it never really becomes an issue in the movie.

We do see Mr Nobody in flashbacks when he helps Han fake his death, but these took place a long time before the plane crash and we see nothing of Mr Nobody in the 'present' day, so it's unclear whether he died in the crash or not.

Jakob took Cipher from the plane and presumably left before it crashed, so did he take Mr Nobody as well? He used to work for him, so he might well have had a grudge to settle and he might have taken him to the same location where they were keeping Cipher.

Even though he starts the movie as a villain, Jakob is a good guy by the end, so we don't think he'd kill Mr Nobody in cold blood on the plane or afterwards. And if he did kill him, then we'd think that Dom or somebody else would have found his body in the plane wreckage.

The most likely explanation, as far as we tell, is that Jakob left Mr Nobody on the plane as he had what he came for (Cipher) and could come back for the half of Project Aries he was after. Once it crashed, Mr Nobody knew that he had to go into hiding and trusted in Dom to save the day.

We know from how Mr Nobody kept Han 'dead' all these years that he has the capability to stay hidden and presumed dead, so it wouldn't be a stretch – especially in the world of Fast & Furious which has now included space travel in a car.

Fast & Furious 9 is out now in cinemas.
