Rare coins can sell for an absolute fortune on eBay.

The Kew Gardens 50p coin is one of the most sought-after pieces out there. With just 210,000 coins in circulation, collectors will do anything to get their hands on one.

Now over on eBay, a seller managed to bag an absolute fortune from selling the coin in a gold edition. The 2009 "ultra cameo rare" piece in gold went for £2,500.

According to the owner, the gold coin is a "rare find for any collector of British decimal coinage". It features the iconic Kew Gardens design with a PF69 grading, meaning it's in near-perfect condition.

Since the seller put it up on eBay, it racked up a total of 33 bids from 11 different users. During the 10-day duration, it went from a starting price of 99p to £2,500.

It didn't take long for it to reach the hundreds as the first bid kicked off at £125. Then one day later it reached £500 before hitting the £1,000 mark.
