Marketa Vondrousova vs Petra Martic French Open 2019 Preview and Prediction

There will be a new French Open semi-finalist as Marketa Vondrousova and Petra Martic seek to become the unlikely name left in the final four. It is the deepest either player has ever got in any slam with just three fourth round runs between them.

Martic is one of a number of players who had something of a second life in tennis following a lengthy injury layoff a few years back. Since then, she has continued to improve and was at a career high inside the top 30 just this past month. An Istanbul title and Madrid quarter final suggested promise, something she has built on with this run to the quarter finals. She backed up a stunning win over Karolina Pliskova by coming from a set down to beat the always dangerous Kaia Kanepi, also being 2-0 and 40-0 down in the third before fighting back. “It was tough mentally for me today,” Martic said. “Especially because I was stopped four times before in the fourth round… I was doubting whether I was ever going to get that fourth round [win].”

Vondrousova was highly touted but injuries led to some stop start progress over the past few years. She has been fit all throughout 2019 and the benefits are there for all to see. She has two finals this year and several statement wins, including two against Simona Halep. She was utterly dominant against 12th seed Anastasija Sevastova in the fourth round, winning 6-2 6-0. She broke 6 times altogether and would win the last 9 games of the match to move on in just under an hour.

Martic won their previous meeting at the Istanbul final coming from a set down to beat the young Czech. That will give her plenty of confidence coming into this one but Vondrousova is peaking at the right time and will be eager to avenge that loss, on a much bigger stage.
