King Charles approves new coins featuring George Michael
The Royal Mint will release new designs featuring the Wham! singer, who was a friend of Princess Diana

George Michael will feature on a range of commemorative coins to be released by the Royal Mint this year.

The Wham! singer, who died aged 53 on Christmas Day in 2016, will be depicted on coins that range in value from 50p to £200.

On Tuesday the King, along with the Privy Council, gave his assent to the coins.

Michael had a long association with the royal family. He was a friend of Diana, Princess of Wales, and attended parties at Kensington Palace. He later revealed that on one occasion a young Prince William had asked if he might entertain party guests by singing a song.
