Scarlett Moffatt has revealed she had a spiritual awakening as she participated in the BBC Two series Pilgrimage, and now describes herself as a Christian.

The former Gogglebox star joined Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain where she explained that she found herself ‘defending’ her beliefs during the filming of the programme.

Scarlett also admitted she is now ‘getting used to’ being a Christian.

‘It was really thought provoking,’ she told the presenters. ‘I am normally on my phone or chatting with my friends but I have taken the time to think now.

‘Now I would say that I am a Christian. I am now still getting used to it. We went to live with some monks and we chatted about our beliefs and I found myself defending my religion and beliefs and then I thought that it must mean a lot to me.’

Scarlett is among the seven celebrities that feature in the new series, along with interior designer and presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, England cricketing legend Monty Panesar and Emmerdale actor Louisa Clein.

Former Countdown host and Apprentice advisor Nick Hewer, comedian Shazia Mirza and Paralympian Will Bayley also appear.

The seven stars were filmed ‘following in the footsteps’ of sixth-Century monk Saint Columba on ‘ancient pilgrimages and heritage walking trails’ covering 1,000 miles from Ireland to Scotland.

‘Over 15 days, the seven pilgrims will follow in the footsteps of the sixth century Irish monk, Saint Columba, seeking out his legacy as a key figure in early British Christianity who helped spread the faith from Ireland to Scotland and beyond,’ the synopsis reads.

‘Following ancient pilgrimages and heritage walking trails, the celebrity pilgrims begin their journey in the town of Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, then travel through Northern Ireland and over the sea by boat to western Scotland.

‘From there, they head up towards the Highlands before exploring the Hebridean Isle of Lewis and Harris. They go to Stornaway and then to the Calanais Stones before arriving at their final destination, Iona, a tiny island in the Inner Hebrides and the site of Saint Columba’s most revered monastery.’

It continues: ‘Covering more than 1600km, they visit places of worship, from pagan stones to an early Christian cave and a contemporary mosque and Sikh temple. This journey will test the pilgrims not just spiritually but physically too.’

Scarlett’s spiritual journey comes after she completely took viewers by surprise when she showed off her newfound grasp of opera during a performance on Comic Relief last month.

Alongside Nina Wadia, Tamzin Outhwaite, Rosie Jones and Helen George, Scarlett was given just 24 hours to learn a famous medley of operatic arias, before performing it live together on stage at The London Coliseum.

To make it more daunting, they were accompanied by the ENO orchestra and chorus, in front of an audience of 2,000 die-hard opera fans.

But the five ladies all smashed the challenge, being met by whoops from the crowd and thoroughly impressing viewers watching at home.

Scarlett particularly blew fans away with her incredible vocals, with the group all having no previous operatic experience.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
