School where 75 pupils died from infected blood denies blame

Survivors from a school where 75 pupils died after being given infected blood treatments have accused its present-day staff of trying to “deny responsibility” for the tragedy.

The Lord Mayor Treloar College was the only school in the country with an NHS haemophilia centre on site. A total of 119 boys with haemophilia attended in the 1970s and 80s. At least 89 were infected with HIV, hepatitis C or both through contaminated drugs.

Documents have emerged from the 1970s showing that the government was aware of trials being conducted on children at the college, with some pupils claiming they were used as “guinea pigs” to test drugs that turned out to be contaminated with deadly viruses.
