Doctor says common Christmas health problem should never be ignored
Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi says the common Christmas health problem should "never be ignored"

A doctor has highlighted a common health issue during the festive season that should never be overlooked. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist with a following of 473,000 on TikTok (@doctorsethimd), regularly shares his expertise and experiences.

The Harvard University graduate has recently gone viral for shedding light on a prevalent Christmas health concern that people often dismiss, according to What's The Jam. In a recent video that has garnered over 1.5 million views and 26,000 likes, he discusses a common health problem likely to occur this Christmas and emphasises the importance of seeking medical attention before it escalates.

Dr Sethi recounted treating a patient with chronic heartburn who later developed oesophageal cancer, stating: "This is a common gut symptom you should never ignore."

He further explained: "Heartburn happens when the lower oesophageal sphincter, which should close after eating, stays open. [This causes] stomach acid reflux back into the food pipe.

"Over time, this can result in a precancerous condition known as Barrets, which could potentially lead to oesophageal cancer." For occasional heartburn, Dr Sethi suggests sleeping on your left side and having dinner at least four hours before bedtime, reports the Mirror.

He also recommends consuming unsweetened fennel seeds post meals to alleviate discomfort. He concludes by advising: "If you have chronic heartburn, consult your doctor. Especially if you are experiencing difficulty swallowing or a sensation of food getting stuck."

As Christmas looms around the corner, it's tempting to pile up on sumptuous festive foods that are a treat for the taste buds but might not sit well with our stomachs. The NHS reports approximately 13,200 people seeking advice for heartburn during Christmas and Boxing Day.

Dr Sethi, while indulging in the season's offerings like many of us, advises caution with certain dishes. He notes, "I'm particularly careful of foods that might lead to digestive discomfort, like rich, high-fat dishes, or those with excessive sugar. To navigate holiday gatherings, I focus on balance."

He doesn't shy away from festive feasts but practices moderation by saying, "I don't bring my own food, but I try to enjoy smaller portions and prioritise light, fibre-rich options like salad and roasted vegetables. Always go for lean protein and ensure to stay hydrated."

Dr Sethi believes in the principle of moderation to revel in the Christmas fare without jeopardising comfort, adding, "Remind yourself to enjoy everything in moderation. That way, you get to savour all the great Christmas food, without compromising how you feel – and avoid heartburn for good."
