How to stay safe from respiratory illnesses over the holidays
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — As we gather for our holiday celebrations, it’s important to remember that this is the peak season for respiratory illnesses.
According to the McLean County Health Department, it is expected to see a rise in cases of COVID, RSV and the flu following the holiday season in December and January.
During the holidays, the health department reminds us to use good cough and sneeze etiquette. This includes coughing in your elbow frequently washing your hands and staying home if you are sick.
What to know about respiratory infections this holiday season
Marianne Manko, the public affairs coordinator for the McLean County Health Department, said it is not too late to get your COVID or flu shot. She also said even if you are healthy, the vaccine can help stop the spread and mitigate severe symptoms.
“Now would be a great time to get that flu or COVID vaccine if you’re going to be around a lot of people at Christmas, Kwanzaa over the New Year’s, you know, over New Year’s because then you’re going to be protected during what might be the peak season for you to be infected,” Manko said.
Health officials said it takes about two weeks for the vaccine’s immunity to take effect. The health department recommends anyone under the age of five or over the age of sixty-five get the vaccine.
