What We Know About Hugh Hammers Mother and Parents on
Spoiler alert, in case you were wondering about that whole 'taming dragons' situation.

The following story contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 7, "The Red Sowing."

HOUSE OF THE Dragon is saving the best for last. In "The Red Sowing," the seventh and penultimate episode of the show's second season, Rhaenyra makes a brilliant strategic choice after coming to terms with the fact that the lowborn Addam has linked up with Seasmoke the dragon—put out a call for anyone with Targaryen blood (and there are lots of Dragonseeds, as they're called, out there), and take a commanding lead in the civil war between the Blacks and the Greens known as "The Dance of the Dragons."

Of course, Rhaenyra's son Jace makes a reasonable point (that he doesn't deliver very well) about the fact that they don't particularly know who they're allowing into their army, and they certainly don't know whether those people are always going to be 100% loyal and morally on their side. But for now that's a problem for later.

Much of "The Red Sowing" is spent on Rhaenyra's exciting search for people who can claim Vermithor and Silverwing. It becomes a Hunger Games/Battle Royale of sorts when all the bastards—including characters Ulf and Hugh, whom we've already spent a bit of time with—come in, and Vermithor quickly extinguishes quite a few of them with fire breath and sheer strength and mass.

But by the end of the brilliantly shot and directed action sequence, Hugh (in a heroic manner) and Ulf (in a 'cockroaches survive a nuclear blast' kind of way) manage to be the last men standing, and claim Vermithor and Silverwing respectively.

We already learned earlier in the season that Ulf was a half-brother of Viserys and Daemon, supposedly a bastard son of Baelon the Brave. So it makes sense that he'd be capable of bonding with a dragon—and how fun was his triumphant moment above King's Landing?

But you may be wondering what, exactly, Hugh the Blacksmith's—Hugh Hammer, as he's known—connection is. He gave it away a bit in the episode, and George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood helps us with the rest.

Who are Hugh Hammer's parents in House of the Dragon?

In "The Red Sowing," Hugh speaks of what he knows and remembers about his mother. "I never knew my father. That much is true. But I did know my mother," he said, revealing that than his mother was actually a prostitute with the signature Targaryen quality: long silver hair. She was believed to be Viserys's aunt, and used to tell Hugh that he we was no different from Viserys or Daemon. But, Hugh said, he was ashamed of her.

Hugh's father identity is not known, and doesn't really matter—his mother was believed to be Saera Targaryen. That means his grandfather was King Jaehaerys I (Rhaenys's, Viserys's and Daemon's father), who was Vermithor's previous rider.

Is Hugh's mom Saera Targaryen? Who is Saera anyway?

Hugh's implied mother is Saera Targaryen, who was the ninth child of King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne; she was known throughout Westeros for her promiscuity, and was eventually disowned by her father, sent to live with the Silent Sisters and meant to live out the remainder of her life in celibacy.

However, she escaped, and eventually began her own brothel and lived as a concubine. While this is a unique story for a highborn character in the Game of Thrones world, we can rule out seeing her in House of the Dragon—Hugh speaks about her in the past tense, and in Fire & Blood it's said that she died before her father even did.
