D'Margio Wright-Phillips made his senior debut for Stoke City against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, much to the delight of grandfather Ian Wright

Ian Wright was overjoyed to see his grandson make his professional debut for Stoke City and advance the remarkable footballing legacy of his family.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips lined up in attack for the Potters and played almost the entire match in a resounding 2-0 victory over League Two club Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.

The 20-year-old is the son of former Manchester City, Chelsea and England winger Shaun, who in turn is the son of Arsenal and Three Lions hero Ian.

D'Margio - also the nephew of striker Bradley - joined Championship side Stoke on a free transfer from Manchester City in February last year and previously spent time with Blackburn Rovers' youth set-up.

Stoke confirmed he would be making his debut with a tweet ahead of kick-off and Ian responded with seven star-eyes emojis.

The 58-year-old - who won the FA Cup in 1993 and 1998 - also posted heart emojis on Instagram and wrote "proud grandfather" to mark the momentous occasion.

Wright served as a pundit for Arsenal's clash at Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon, which the Gunners lost 1-0, and he opened up on the emotions surrounding his grandson's debut after the match.

"Great day for us. It makes me happy," he told ITV Sport. "The nerves. I've been thinking about it all day.

"You can't help but think about it. You just hope he plays well. Does well for himself, does well for the team.

"The team won, he played 86 minutes and the team took him off so I'm quite pleased he got through the game."

Stoke manager Michael O'Neill reserved praise for the debutant as he delivered his verdict on the match, saying: "D'Margio was a real bright spark though we didn't get the ball into him enough.

"He is capable of making of things happen. He is diminutive but brave."

The Potters boss confirmed D'Margio was training with the senior squad before Christmas and declared the youngster gives him "something to think about".

"Young D'Margio Wright-Phillips has trained a lot with the first team recently and he's another forward that is a little bit different from what we have at this minute in time. We're excited by his progress."

O'Neill added: "We've been pretty consistent with the 3-5-2 but we do have options. Young D'Margio gives us something to think about because he's a little bit different from a number of attacking players we have.

"He's a little bit smaller but he's sharper, more intricate, more technical than a lot of the others as well. He may well get his opportunity over the next few games."
