With the recent celebration around International Women’s Day, which happens every year on March 8, you might have found yourself wondering when International Men’s Day is.

Here is everything you need to know about the special occasion celebrating men and highlighting the issues they face.

When is International Men’s Day 2022?

International Men’s Day (IMD) is celebrated on November 19 each year. This year, in 2022, the day will fall on a Saturday.

It’s a global holiday that recognises and celebrates the cultural, political and socio-economic achievements of men, while highlighting the issues they face in today’s world.

The day was created years after the establishment of International Women’s Day, as an equivalent of it, with the first International Men’s Day being celebrated 30 years ago, in 1992.

International Men’s Day is built on six core objectives. These are:

  • To promote positive male role models.
  • To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, childcare, and to the environment.
  • To focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.
  • To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.
  • To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.
  • To create a safer, better world; where people can be sage and grow to reach their full potential.

Why is it important?

International Men’s Day is a day of celebrating the experiences and contributions of men and boys.

The day is also marked by various organisations and charities raising awareness and funds for issues or diseases that concern men’s wellbeing.

Issues that have received a lot of attention across the UK during recent IMDs were the high male suicide rate, male cancers like prostate cancer, male victims of sexual violence, and the negative portrayal of men in certain ways.
