Six years after meeting on the set of historical drama film Mary Queen of Scots, Jack Lowden and Saoirse Ronan secretly tied the knot this month. The exciting news was announced by The Sunday Independent, who reported that the intimate ceremony took place on 20 July at the Edinburgh Central Registrar’s Office.

The couple have built illustrious careers in the acting sphere, while choosing to keep their personal lives and relationship largely on the down low.

Now, as the couple no doubt bask in newlywed bliss, Grazia has put Jack's shiny career and achievements under the microscope.

Jack Lowden's early life

Jack, 34, was born on 2 June 1990 in Chelmsford, Essex, but grew up in Oxton - a small rural village in Scotland.

Despite taking dance lessons as a child, Jack realised that he was better suited to acting, and as a result, his parents enrolled him at Scottish Youth Theatre in Edinburgh aged 10. From there, his passion for acting grew, leading him to not only perform in small-scale pantos and stage concerts, but also study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and later obtain a BA in acting from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow in 2011.

Jack Lowden's career

Jack secured his TV debut in 2010, playing Nick Fairclough in Being Victor. But he continued to tread the boards too, and his efforts in Ghosts were recognised in 2014 when he received two gongs for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

While his last theatrical credit dates back to 2018 in Measure for Measure, Jack's TV and film career has taken precedence. His most recent project on the small screen is The Gold - a drama based on the events around the Brink's-Mat robbery in 1983 - which was renewed for a second series in November last year. Before landing the role of River Cartwright in Apple TV's acclaimed series Slow Horses, as well as bagging roles in other titles including The Long Song, Jack's TV breakthrough came with BBC's War & Peace in 2016.

The actor's talent was subsequently picked up on the big screen, with Jack taking leading roles in Dunkirk as an RAF-fighter pilot, as well as starring appearances in England Is Mine and Mary Queen of Scots. In 2020, Jack was also a co-producer on horror film Kindred.

Jack Lowden's relationship with Saoirse Ronan

Jack and Saoirse's relationship dates back to December 2018, when they starred together in Mary Queen of Scots. Saoirse played the titular role, while Jack portrayed Mary's second spouse, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. Page Six was the first to report that they were dating, but a year later, in December 2019, Saoirse simply answered, 'No' when presented with this question from a journalist: 'Am I allowed to ask if you’re going out with the person that everyone thinks you’re going out with?'

In the years since, the couple have never wavered from their notoriously tight-lipped stance on discussing their relationship, but rare Instagram photos together, combined with cosy paparazzi shots, left no room for doubt that they were serious.

They never confirmed their engagement, but rumours first swirled that they were gearing up for marriage last October, when Saoirse was photographed sporting a ring. Fast forward nine months, and the happy couple have said 'I do!'
