For weeks, those following the case of Jay Slater speculated over what could have happened to the teen who vanished during a mates' holiday in Tenerife. Now a preliminary autopsy has provided some harrowing answers.

On July 15, the 19-year-old's remains were finally discovered in the rocky Rural de Teno park, mere metres from his last known location, following a desperate month-long search. However, officials warned that identifying a cause of death might take time given the 'very deteriorated' state of the body, which was recovered from an almost inaccessible ravine.

Jay's family is now hoping to bring his body home to Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, where they hope to give their 'beautiful boy' a heartfelt send-off. Questions remain in the case that has shocked and saddened many Brits, with the full autopsy results yet to be disclosed. However, preliminary findings paint a sad picture of Jay's final moments out in the wilderness.

A preliminary autopsy points to the cause of death being on account of 'a fall or plunge from height', with a Civil Guard spokesperson confirming that Jay's catastrophic injuries included several broken bones. They shared: "The body of the man located yesterday has been identified of that as Jay Slater through fingerprint comparison and identification. The result of the preliminary autopsy points to the cause of death being a fall or plunge from height due to the broken bones he suffered."

Photographs of the lonely ravine, which has a steep drop to the ground below, show how teams would have required ropes to gain access to the spot where Jay was found dead, carrying out their search amid dense vegetation, while navigating changeable, and at times perilous, weather conditions.

In a heartbreaking detail reported by the Mail Online, the Slaters were advised not to visit Jay's body in the morgue, however, they have reportedly found some 'very small comfort' after learning the apprentice bricklayer likely died instantly. Following the initial shock of their terrible ordeal, Jay's loved ones may now face a year-long wait for the answers they seek, given that UK authorities might need to hold off on their inquest for months until the Spanish police complete their findings. Given that Jay's case is complex, a subsequent UK inquest could well then take even longer.

This comes after Jay's friend Ayub Qassim who brought him back to a rural Airbnb the night before his disappearance – addressed various claims circulating in the wake of the tragic case via a YouTube livestream. This included the suggestion that Jay had been scared during his brief stay in the remote village of Masca. Ayub told followers: "I don't know why he was scared and he ain't here to answer that question. I don't want to say, people could be going through something in their own heads, who knows, do you know what I'm saying?"
