Keanu Reeves' old boots are sleeper grails
We don't know how exactly he does it, but Keanu Reeves has a magic with menswear. Because, for years, the actor's had an ability to make even the most normal clothes go bang. Back in April, Reeves was spotted in a very Eurohiker fleece that became a gorpcore trophy overnight. And that black beanie he wears every winter? Yeah, that's got an entire Instagram dedicated to it.
So yesterday, when the John Wick star made a rare public appearance in New York City, big fashion guys could predict another sleeper hit. And no one was left disappointed when his boots came into full view.
Well-worn and well-loved, Reeves' boots are from a company called Magellan & Mulloy. You've probably never heard of them before. And that's OK! But they were originally founded in 1890 as a men's tailor based out in Savile Row. Around the '80s, the brand was bought out, and it shifted its focus to creating some of the greatest boots in the universe.
Reeves' pair was the Adventure Denver. Handmade in Italy from cognac-coloured leather, he's worn them into a faded light brown. The boot is lined with a Sympatex membrane that makes them totally waterproof, and chunky rope laces and D-ring eyelets keep everything locked in place. Underfoot, the midsole is infused with Vibram tech to make it extra comfy, and if you take a closer look, you'll noticed that there's an extra panel of leather around the toe area. It might look a little weird at first, but that's been specifically added for bikers, as they use that part of the foot to shift gears.
So, do you have to be into motorbikes to wear these? No. Just take a look at Keanu Reeves. While he does own his own custom bike company, Magellan & Mulloy's Adventure Denver looks just as good with motorcycle suits as it does with, well… nice and normal suits. And by token them being battered, bruised and beloved, they're not trying too hard to hit grail status – and that's exactly what makes them so.
