It was heartbreak for Kimi Raikkonen at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as the formula one icon crashed out of the final race of his storied career.

Raikkonen was the first driver to retire in the season-ending race, after clipping a barrier in the Abu Dhabi showdown.

The 42-year-old had an issue with the brakes on his car, which then made him spin out from the track and collide with part of the perimeter.

The Finnish ace was then seen trying to get back to the pits in his final ever outing, before his Alfa Romeo car was retired from the competition.

Raikkonen retires at the age of 42 with a world title, 21 race wins and 103 podiums to his name.

Filling Alfa Romeo seats next year are Valtteri Bottas, who will be leaving Mercedes, and F1's first ever Chinese racer Guanyu Zhou.

Prior to the race Raikkonen had cut a stoic figure, and said his wife would be more emotional about the grand farewell than himself personally.

'I'm looking forward to get the season done,' the 'Iceman', who made his Formula One debut in 2001, told reporters at Yas Marina.

'It's nice that it comes to an end and I'm looking forward to the normal life after.

'I think for sure my wife will be more emotional about it.

"I doubt that the kids will really care either way, I think they will find other things to do that are more interesting. They like coming to a warm country and be in a pool and other things but it's nice to have them here.'
