Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 debuts with world's first LPCAMM2 memory alongside Intel Core Ultra CPUs

Lenovo has updated the ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 laptop for 2024 with a new chassis, Intel Meteor Lake processor options, and a better workstation GPU for the top-end model. We were quite impressed with the 2023 ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 laptop and gave it a "very good" rating of 92%. So, if the quality of the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 is on par with its predecessor, consumers are in for a treat.

Starting the discussion with the most interesting part of the machine, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 is the world's first laptop with an LPCAMM2 module from Micron. LPCAMM stands for "low-power compression attached memory module" and aims to address the shortcomings of both SO-DIMM and soldered LPDDR memory solutions.

In essence, LPCAMM2 is a board that contains LPDDR and DDR memory chips operating in dual-channel model. The LPCAMM2 module not only brings speed and efficiency improvements over regular DDR memory, but is also user-replaceable unlike LPDDR chips that are soldered directly to the motherboard.

Lenovo claims that the up to 64 GB LPCAMM2 module inside the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 saves a massive 64% space vs DDR5 SO-DIMM memory while requiring 61% less "active power".

Complementing the speedy LPCAMM2 memory is the option for a whopping 8 TB of storage in the form of two 4 TB drives arranged in RAID 0/1.

Moving on, the ThinkPad P1 G7 can be configured with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU with vPro. Like the ThinkPad P1 Gen 6, Lenovo is also allowing users to order the machine with regular gaming GPUs with the option for up to an RTX 4070 laptop GPU.

On the display front, the ThinkPad G7 features a 16-inch 16:10 panel with an optional touch-capable OLED screen boasting a 3,840 x 2,400 resolution, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and 400 nits of brightness. Lower-end variants will have to contend with 100% sRGB IPS displays in 1600p and 1200p flavors with 500 and 400 nits of brightness respectively.

Other notable details include a healthy port selection marked by two Thunderbolt 4, one Type-A, an HDMI 2.1 out, and an SD card reader.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 G7 will be available for purchase starting in June 2024 at an entry price of 2,450 EUR ($2,621).
