Liverpool host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this evening as Jurgen Klopp's side look to return to the top of the table

Liverpool have the opportunity to go back top of the Premier League with a win or draw against Antonio Conte's Tottenham Hotspur this evening.

The Reds have no new injury problems and could once again call upon forward Roberto Firmino, who has returned to training after a foot injury.

Tottenham are without Sergio Reguilon, who has a groin issue and may not play again this season. The same also applies to the injured trio of Matt Doherty, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga.

The match kicks off at 7.45pm and will be televised live on BT Sport. Paul Gorst, Ian Doyle and Theo Squires will be at Anfield for us, providing live updates on the action, as well as bringing you team news, analysis and reaction.

Clock ticking

I said it was a big 35 minutes in Liverpool’s season but we’ve seen 10 of those go by without much happening. Spurs are defending superbly. Liverpool haven’t looked like scoring.

Salah stopped on the break

Sessegnon is now booked for holding back Salah on the counter attack.

Tsimikas booked

The Liverpool left-back is booked for a foul on Kulusevski

Duo depart

Robertson and Henderson are off for Jota and Tsimikas.

History to repeat itself?

All of Liverpool's previous three home matches with Tottenham have ended in a 2-1 home win for the Reds... they could do with that outcome this evening

Double change incoming

Kostas Tsimikas and Diogo Jota are about to come on for Liverpool.

Liverpool 0-1 TottenhamPaul Gorst

Well, then...

That was not in the script! It’s 1-0 to Spurs on the counter-attack. Harry Kane is allowed to bring a ball down and carry it far too long before it’s played to Sessegnon. He squares for Son and it’s 1-0 to the visitors. A huge 35 minutes await us in this Premier League season.

GOAL: Liverpool 0-1 Tottenham

Son fires the visitors ahead at Anfield. Sessegnon plays a ball to the back post to the South Korean, who fires past Alisson.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamPaul Gorst

Son danger

A little reminder of what Spurs can offer there as Son carries it virtually the entirety of Liverpool’s half before the shot is blocked by a few players. They now have a corner.

Davies booked

Ben Davies, who got away with a foul on Salah in the first half, is booked for bringing down the advancing Egyptian.

Pressing machine

Liverpool’s pressing has been superb today when needed. They are really putting the Spurs back five and midfield under pressure but yet to force any costly mistakes.

Misplaced pass

I was about to say Liverpool had started this half well and they have but that was a bit slack from Thiago. A ball out to Robertson on the left was loose and it lost momentum, went out for a throw. Liverpool seeing the ball high up the pitch in the early going though. Attack v defence.

Must-win fixture

The biggest of 45 minutes ahead for Liverpool’s title chances. Wolves and West Ham very much in the hunt for Europe and Europa League football following United’s dismal defeat at Brighton. They both face City before the end of the season and stand as good a chance as anyone to take points off the reigning champions. Klopp’s men have to win their games to keep up the pressure.

Second half is here

Here we go. Big 45 minutes ahead.

As expected at Anfield

Pretty much the game we expected, with Tottenham sitting back and looking to block all the attacking holes and lines and then hit Liverpool on the break.

The Reds have actually played pretty well and haven’t been frustrated, and as a result have started to force fouls out of Tottenham in dangerous areas and made them produce some last-ditch clearances and interceptions.

The threat, of course, is that the visitors have quality in the front three and there have been a couple of hints of that, although Alisson hasn’t had a save of note to make yet.

The first goal in this game is going to be crucial. No need for Liverpool to look to make any changes yet, however.

HT player ratings

Alisson Becker 6

First-half save from Bentancur would have been rendered irrelevant anyway by offside flag.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

One fine piece of defending denied Son, crosses regularly caused Tottenham issues and edged battle with Sessegnon first half.

Ibrahima Konate 7

Kept things simple defensively and used pace when required, and threat at set-pieces with height.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Clipped top of bar with header from corner and helped to keep Kane quiet before break.

Andy Robertson 7

Began to get forward more prominently the longer first half progressed. Good deliveries from corners caused problems.

Fabinho 7

Good tackling and positioning kept Liverpool on the front foot before break.

Thiago Alcantara 8

Used ball expertly in attempting to pull Tottenham defence out of position and tenacity allowed Liverpool to dominate midfield.

Jordan Henderson 7

Led Liverpool’s early pressing and often a spare man in midfield with Tottenham more concerned by the wide men.

Mohamed Salah 7

At times double-marked with the visitors clearly afraid of his threat, which he was able to deliver on occasion before break.

Sadio Mane 6

Became a little bogged down amid all the Tottenham defenders before interval, but started to pester more regularly before half-time.

Luis Diaz 8

Tested Lloris with low shot and constantly caused the Tottenham right flank issues, not least with his willingness to tackle and drift into other positions.

20:34KEY EVENT

HT: Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham

Nothing to seperate the sides at the break. Both teams have hit the woodwork, in what was starting to develop into a lively encounter the more and more the half progressed. Liverpool will hope to find a way through a resilient Spurs side after the restart.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

+1

One minute of additional time to be played.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTheo Squires

End-to-end action

Can’t look away from this for a second at the moment. All-out action even if we’re lacking many big saves. Liverpool finishing the half strongly as they continue to knock on the door

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamPaul Gorst

HT approaching... at a bad time

Liverpool won’t want half-time here. It feels like something is about to happen. They’re well on top even if they haven’t had massive chances.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

Hojbjerg hits the post!

Spurs then go up the other end of the pitch and hit the post! Hojbjerg was the player on this occasion who came close to scoring the game's opening goal.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

Diaz comes close!

What a strike that was from Diaz! The Colombian's fierce effort from outside the area is beaten away by Lloris.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

Alexander-Arnold denied

Alexander-Arnold's free-kick effort on the edge of the area is blocked by the Spurs wall, in what was a dangerous position. Liverpool now have a corner, which Robertson will take.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

Woodwork!

Van Dijk comes agonisingly close to scoring the opening goal! His header from a Liverpool corner hits the bar... so close to 1-0.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

Oliver letting the game flow

Referee Michael Oliver appears to be letting a lot of decisions go unpunished here. Ben Davies was not penalised for a foul on Salah moments ago and now Hojbjerg avoids a yellow card for a late lunge on Thiago.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamPaul Gorst

Romero impressing

Every time I watch Cristian Romero for Tottenham he seems to play well. Spurs have themselves a top centre-back there. He’s aggressive and strong and he’s been that so far already for the visitors. He’s just stopped Liverpool making the most of a pressing situation, getting there ahead of Mane I think it was.

Sadio Mane vies with Tottenham Hotspur's Argentinian defender Cristian Romero

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTom Cavilla

Defensive mix-up

Sessegnon's header at the back comes close to playing in Mohamed Salah! Luckily for him, Hugo Lloris was alert to the situation and clawed the ball out of danger.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamTheo Squires

Patience required

Liverpool are going to have to be patient in this one. Spurs frustrating them so far with Lloris yet to be really tested, and remain dangerous on the break. It’s going to take some big game-management.

Liverpool 0-0 TottenhamIan Doyle

Spurs set-up

Tottenham will be happy with this so far but you can see why they have scored some big wins and had even more daft defeats. Their set-up means they are far better at prospering against teams who want to play to win.
