Jon Richardson announces divorce from Lucy Beaumont after 9 years of marriage in shock statement
Comedians Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont have announced they are divorcing.
The couple have been married for nine years but issued a shock statement declaring their split. They said: "After 9 years of marriage, we would like to announce that we have separated. We have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go our separate ways."
“As our only priority is managing this difficult transition for our daughter, we would ask that our privacy is respected at this sensitive time to protect her well-being. We will be making no further comment," they told PA news agency. Jon and Lucy are known for their joint project Meet the Richardsons, in which they play “exaggerated versions of themselves”.
Its fifth series started this month and saw Lucy nominated for a BAFTA TV award in the female performance in a comedy programme category in 2023. Just earlier this month Lucy revealed the downside to working with her husband. She insisted they "make a good team", during a chat with OK! Magazine.
"It’s a great working environment because it feels like a big group of friends", the stand-up comedian said, although she highlighted one downside to working with her other half. "It’s a shame that you can’t see the crew off camera because most of them have worked on the show from the beginning. It’s like a holiday for them."
The Kingston-Upon-Hull comedian teased the end of Meet The Richardsons following the fifth series of the Dave show. "This will probably be the last one, and we’re going out on a high", she stated, before teasing what's ahead: "It carries on from series four." Lucy and Jon met through mutual friend and fellow comedian Roisin Conaty, before dating for a total of two years and eventually walking down the aisle in April, 2015.
Opening up about how Jon tried to "repel her" during an appearance on The Jonathon Ross Show, he said: "Roisin Conaty set us up and for months I said 'if you like this girl don't get us involved because I'll ruin her f**king life'." Explaining why he didn't agree to the set-up at first, he added: "I was very depressed and I thought, why drag someone else down with me." However, Jon did eventually agree to go on a date with Lucy and before the pair even met he also revealed that he'd jokingly saved her number in his phone as 'My Wife'.
One year after their nuptials, the pair welcomed a daughter in September, 2016, and Lucy remembered her traumatic birthing experience during a chat with The Mirror in 2021. At the time, Lucy had been wheeled into theatre for an emergency C-section and responded to the gravity of the situation the only way she knew how - by cracking a joke. "The nurses looked exhausted and I just thought I’d cheer them up. I think I thought I was on the Royal Variety performance or something although I can’t remember what I was saying", she recalled.
Meet The Richardsons premiered in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in late February, 2020, on Dave and has enjoyed a thorough success with viewers as both comedians star as fictionalised versions of themselves discussing their day-to-day in a mockumentary format.
