M25 traffic chaos and severe delays continue as multiple lanes expected to remain closed overnight

An oil spillage on the M25 through Hertfordshire is continuing to cause chaos with disruption expected to last until Thursday (April 21). Yesterday's incident on the motorway left drivers stuck in queues for hours as the emergency services worked to clear the road (April 19).

The incident is continuing to impact traffic today (April 21), with the road expected to remain partially closed throughout the day and overnight. At around 11.15am yesterday morning, a lorry collided with the central reservation and oil was spilt in the crash.

The M25 was blocked in the clockwise direction between Junction 23, near South Mimms, and Junction 25, near Enfield. It has now partially reopened, but two lanes remain closed between Junction 24 (Potters Bar) and Junction 25.

Throughout yesterday, motorists were trapped in the road closure between Junction 23 and Junction 25. Traffic had to slowly be turned around, and drivers at the start of the queue were stuck until the evening.

The road closure remained in place overnight and early on this morning (April 20). In the most recent update, a spokesperson for National Highways tweeted: "The M25 in Hertfordshire clockwise between Junction 23 to J25 is now open.

"Two lanes (of four) remain closed between Junction 24 to J25. These lanes will remain closed until complex road surface clean-up works are complete. This is likely to be ongoing throughout the day and overnight."
