Manchester United v Liverpool LIVE FA Cup result and final score
Manchester United beat their bitter rivals Liverpool in the most extraordinary FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford
Jurgen Klopp addresses retirement reversal rumours

Manchester United produced a stunning comeback to beat Liverpool 4-3 in an epic FA Cup as Amad Diallo scored an 120th winner to deny Jurgen Klopp’s side their quadruple bid.

Diallo scored a breakaway goal at the death - and was then sent off for taking his shirt off in celebration - to send United through to Wembley in a dramatic finish at Old Trafford.

Liverpool had been minutes from the semi-finals, in what is Klopp’s final season at Anfield, but Marcus Rashford scored a 115th minute in extra time, before Diallo’s remarkable winner.

FULL-TIME! Man United 4-3 Liverpool

Erik ten Hag was skipping down the touchline in ungainly, awkward joy. A match to save Manchester United’s season, in his own description, may end up saving his job. It certainly ensured that Liverpool will not win the quadruple, that Jurgen Klopp’s reign will not end at Wembley in May’s FA Cup final and, as a result, that he will not face Pep Guardiola in England again.

But while United often delight in Liverpool’s misfortunes, the euphoria reflected an extraordinary end to an epic encounter. This was about United, about the manner of their rescue act and the improbability of it all. Amad Diallo’s lone United goal came three years ago. He has been a bit-part figure at best, but he emerged from margins to come off the bench, deliver an extra-time winner and be sent off for his celebration. While Ten Hag danced, Amad removed his shirt, at a cost of a second caution, but the telling part was the lightning counter-attack, Alejandro Garnacho releasing the Ivorian to slide his shot past Caoimhin Kelleher.

Erik ten Hag speaks to ITV

It is the United manager’s turn to speak to the media now. He says that “the first 30 minutes was the best of our whole season”.

“We were acting as a team but then we got gaps between the lines and you can’t allow this against one of the best teams in Europe. They outplayed us.

“Then we made changes, we took risks and the players were wonderful. The attitude was great, a strong belief to win this game.

“We have a team that is for the future. Coming up are players who are developing very well like Diallo, Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo.”

Klopp speaks to BBC

Speaking the BBC, Klopp calls the game “super intense”, and adds that Liverpool “were outstanding but we had to finish the game off and we didn’t”.

“I cannot ask for more. The boys gave everything.

“Our decision making was not great. You have to accept the result. They deserve to go to the next round. It was a period in the second half when we should have finished it but we didn’t and we know they could come back.

“I think my boys showed incredible character again. Super effort again. Everybody showed it.

“You cannot compare our season to United’s with the amount of games. It’s fine, we deal with it.

“I really feel for our people. In a few weeks we come again and we give it another try.

“I’m still proud of what I saw today.”

Diallo was next to speak to the media and he’s clearly delighted, though he says he forgot about his first yellow when he decided to take his shirt off while celebrating. He’ll miss the next league game.

He says that today is a “dream come true”.

“That goal will give me a lot of confidence and I want to continue like this. I’m very happy. The most important thing is to win this game.

“I wanted to give it back to Garnacho but I see the defender and I have to go on my own. It is unbelievable, it is a dream for me to score the last goal for Manchester United.

“It is one of the best games of the season so we want to continue like this.”

So attention turns to the title run-in for Liverpool, who overall were extremely unlucky today. They might look back on today with a fair amount of regret considering their dominance at times.

The Reds’ next two games come at home to Brighton and Sheffield United before another trip to Old Trafford on 7 April. They then play Atalanta in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

In that earlier interview, Rashford called today “a massive game in the history of Manchester United”.

“It gets us through to a semi-final but even a normal game against Liverpool we have to win.

“Listen to the noise, you can tell what a big game it is, a huge occasion. I haven’t had the season I wanted but night likes this at Old Trafford are what it’s all about.

“I had to score that chance at the end, I wish it was done half an hour ago but we got the job done and we have to get something out of this season.”

There will be no final Pep v Klopp showdown in English football. Livepool’s quadruple dream is over, though they can still deliver a treble of sorts and a hugely successful final season for their manager.

For United, a largely underwhelming season has at least one memorable result. They move into the semi-final draw as they look to keep their only hope of silverware alive.

The semi-finals will take place on the weekend of 20 April. Attention now turns to the international break.
