People have spotted a glaring error in this M&S advert
There’s nothing better than when two of our favourite retailers create online drama.
Marks and Spencer and its rival Aldi have been in many bitter court disputes in the past over Aldi’s copycat products, from its ‘Cuthbert’ remix of the iconic Colin the Caterpillar cake to its suspiciously similar light-up gin bottles.
However, it seems all is fair in love and supermarkets, because Aldi has reignited the banter war after spotted its very own discount plonk in M&S’s online summer advertising campaign.
A beady-eyed member of the German supermarket’s social media team noticed the error in a promotional image for M&S garden furniture.
Right there on the Roma Garden Table (priced at £669 with four chairs) is a bottle of Aldi’s bestselling Specially Selected Côtes De Provence Blanc (priced at £7.49, although not with chairs).
Eager to poke fun at the gaffe, Aldi responded with a social post reading: ‘@marksandspencer drink Aldi wine pass it on.’
The post has since received over 57,000 likes and 5,500 comments, and resulted in the popular Aldi wine selling out online.

Milena Bilanca quipped, ‘A prop stylist isn’t being hired again,’ while another user added: ‘How have you not photoshopped a caterpillar cake in there? Lawyers in the office? Blink twice for yes.’
Back in 2021, M&S took legal action against Aldi because of its Colin the Caterpillar lookalike cake called Cuthbert the Caterpillar. An out-of-court agreement was made in November 2022, which saw the German retailer having to alter the cake’s appearance.
Then, Aldi lost another court battle over their festive gin, when it was ruled that the retailer had infringed M&S’s copyright with similar bottles.
Now, it seems Aldi is getting one back with this social media mistake.
In response to the hilarious incident, an M&S spokesperson said: ‘Sometimes you regret asking guests to BYOB – this one is fine for a prop but if you’d prefer to enjoy a top-quality bottle of award-winning rosé with your new garden furniture, we’d recommend our gorgeously fruity and aromatic Collection Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire rosé – an absolute must for lovers of pink drinks in the sunshine!’
