Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remembered at the Capitol

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Monday marks the 40th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day observance.

King was a pastor, social advocate, and a leader in the civil rights movement.

He was assassinated in 1968, but he created a social justice legacy many fight for today.

”To remember a man who gave his life that’s so important people don’t realize. He died for a cause he thought was so important,” said Pastor Stephen Latham.

Commemorating his life, a group gathered in front of the Wyoming Capitol steps on Monday.

They listened to speakers talk about our nation’s history and the role equality plays moving forward.

“Young people are coming along that have never even heard of Dr. Martin Luther King and his legacy. We need to keep this going so that they will understand the significance and somebody will step up and be another Martin Luther King,” said Mercedes Brooks-Hunt, Coordinator, MLK Rally.

The speakers reflected on voter rights legislation, the role of women as leaders in the civil rights movement and the cultural and civil unrest of the last few years.

This day commemorates what men, women, and civil rights leaders have done so far and will do in the future.

“For that to be the continued conversation moving forward, because if you love your neighbor the way you’re supposed, and you treat them the way you’re supposed to, then the conversation looks a lot different, and the work becomes a whole lot easier,” JaQuale Brooks- Richardson, Speaker, MLK Rally.
