Chelsea have continued their push to snap up the best young talents in world football by making an enquiry for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

Tel has been a long-term target for the Blues, with the 19-year-old having been viewed as one of the best young forwards in the game.

The France youth international has been viewed as a star from a young age having broken through at Rennes.

He was handed his first-term debut by the Ligue 1 outfit at the age of 16 years and 110 days, becoming the club's youngest player to feature in an official match. 

Tel notably beat the previous record held by Eduardo Camavinga, who set the milestone on his path to joining Real Madrid.

The forward's time at Rennes was short, making just seven brief substitute appearances in the French top flight before moving to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022.

The German giants forked out £25million to sign the 17-year-old, months after the forward had captained France to the Under-17 European Championship title, a tournament where he scored three times.

'Mathys Tel is one of the biggest talents in Europe, a very quick, technically strong and versatile striker,' Hasan Salihamidzic, then-Bayern Munich sporting director, said after sealing Tel's signing.

'We’ve been watching him for a long time and we were able to convince him to take his next important steps in Munich with us now. We are proud of that, as there were a lot of clubs who wanted to sign him. 

'The development of such an exceptional young player is an exciting project for us all. 

'Of course, Mathys needs time, he needs minutes on the pitch and rhythm. We are all convinced he has a great career in front of him and that he will help our team.'

Tel took on the role as a super sub during his debut season in the Bundesliga, with 21 on his 22 appearances coming from the bench during the 2022-23 campaign.

He netted five times and largely operated as a centre forward during his minutes, but was also utilsed on both flanks.

Tel became Bayern's youngest-ever scorer, having hit the back of the net two months into his Bayern career in a DFB Cup match against Viktoria Cologne.

He has remained an impact playing as part of Thomas Tuchel's side last season, making just 10 starts in his 41 appearances in all competitions, netting 10 times.

His position, however, was altered following Bayern Munich's £100m signing of Harry Kane from Tottenham in the summer transfer window, with Tel largely operating from the left flank.

Tel has admitted that Kane has been a role model for him as he seeks to develop as a forward. 

'He's a great striker, he has shown that across his career. I'm a striker too, so he's a role model for me,' Tel said last year. It's important to have people to learn from technically and in terms of finishing. 

'Often I don't even have to ask him. He just comes over to me and tells me: "Mathys, you can do that, or that". He's a role model to me, and he is helping me a lot.

'He will often give me advice on what I could do differently. He will tell me: 'That could have gone better had you done that'. He pays close attention to the little details and he's looking to help me in any way he can. He's supporting me a great deal.'

Tel's progress was rewarded last March when the forward signed a new contract until the summer of 2029.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund hailed the forward's progress, with the teenager viewed as a key part of the club's future.

'Every club wants players like Mathys Tel: young, extremely talented, hungry and willing to learn,' Freund said.

'The way he plays at this level at the age of 18 is something special. 

'We want the right mix in our squad and Mathys plays an important role here. 

'He knows how FC Bayern ticks, he feels comfortable and at home - now we're taking the next steps together and looking forward to the coming years with him.'

The contract came despite reported interest from Man United and Chelsea, while Tel had previously been linked with Tottenham when Bayern had been in talks for Kane in the summer of 2023.

His future has been the subject of recent debate, with Tel having been limited to just 12 appearances in all competitions this season, playing just 351 minutes in total.

Tel has described his favoured role as being between a number nine and a left winger, with the Frenchman naming Theirry Henry among his ideals.

Speaking to the Bundesliga in 2023, Tel listed his pace, finishing and dribbling among his strengths, but acknowledged he needed to improve his spatial awareness, admitting he often attempted to do things more quickly.

Tel is typically seen playing with a bandage on his right hand following a small injury.

He revealed that he opted to keep the bandage as a good luck charm, having performed well wearing one. 

The French Under-21 international reportedly held talks with Kompany last month to state his desire to succeed at the club, despite making just just three starts this season.

The opportunity to play more regularly in London may attract the youngster, with Chelsea expected to need to pay in excess of £40m to secure his signature.

Mail Sport has reported Bayern are understood to have monitored the situation of Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, though as of yet no swap deal has been discussed or offered by the Blues.

It is understood Nkunku would be open to joining Bayern if the opportunity presented itself.

Bayern chiefs sought to stress on Tuesday that Tel remains a part of their long-term plans. 

'We have a very good dialogue because he´s a big talent who should take on an important role for us. We´ve had a lot of conversations. Our clear aim is that Mathys will make the breakthrough with us,' Freund said.

Off the pitch, Tel was revealed in November to be dating a candidate for the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Ampiot represented France in the Miss Universe pageant on November 16 - an international beauty event that features 130 women from around the world - and placed in the top 30.

The couple appeared to confirm their relationship last month after sharing photos from a holiday during Germany's mid-season break in the desert.

Ampiot, who is from Guadeloupe, revealed last year that she had made the move to London.
