Challenges and Potential: Understanding Migration and Building a Promising Future in Mauritania

Stay. Strive. Succeed.

February 13, 2024

We, the participants of the international conference on irregular migration, convened in Nouakchott under the theme “Challenges and Potential: Understanding Migration and Building a Promising Future in Mauritania,” hereby declare that we are jointly committed to addressing shared migration challenges and promoting stability. Recognizing the impact of irregular migration, we unite in our resolve to find sustainable solutions.

Last year witnessed a surge in Mauritanians apprehended at the U.S. Southwest Border. In response, the U.S. Embassy in Mauritania has undertaken proactive measures, including coordinating with civil society to undertake awareness campaigns on the dangers associated with irregular migration routes, op-eds, video conferences, media interviews, training on personal development, leadership and vocational skills, grant opportunities targeting youth serving and youth led organizations, grants to local NGOs, and engagement with renowned media outlets to address this phenomenon.

Declaration Points:

1. We, the participants, acknowledge the significant challenge emigration poses for Mauritania and its impact on society and economy, including brain drain and the separation of families.

2. We emphasize the extreme hardships potentially faced by irregular migrants on their journeys, such as the threat of human trafficking, robbery, physical abuse, gender-based violence, and encounters with criminal gangs.

3. Recognizing substantial U.S. investments in Mauritania, particularly with the reinstatement of AGOA eligibility, we underscore the potential for increased business exchange and employment opportunities.

4. We reaffirm our dedication to youth and economic development through programs such as USAID’s Tamkeen and Nafoore, fostering training for young individuals to engage effectively in their communities and pursue economic opportunities.

5. The Embassy is unwaveringly committed to supporting Mauritanian students and young professionals through various programs, including through providing opportunities for training and study in the United States.

6. We recognize the importance of providing legal pathways for Mauritanians to travel to the United States for legitimate purposes and are committed to facilitating this travel.

7. We firmly believe that the solution lies in addressing the root causes of irregular migration and giving Mauritanians in their homeland fields to invest their creative energies. We support the hard work and enthusiasm of Mauritanian youth who want to build a stronger Mauritania that offers more opportunities for future generations.

In conclusion, we declare our determination to overcome shared migration challenges in our hemispheres and foster a promising future for Mauritania and its people.
