The firm's Hong Kong office is one of the largest operations run by an international law firm, but has been hit by a market downturn, data security risks and a political saga.
Mayer Brown is in the process of breaking away from its Greater China offices, where it counts around 170 lawyers across Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, according to four people at the firm.
The U.S.-based firm is set to retain a smaller office in Hong Kong, one lawyer said, with the majority of the Hong Kong staff moving to a separate independent Hong Kong law firm managed by current Mayer Brown partners.
