Stanislaus County confirms measles case in child

(FOX40.COM) — Stanislaus County Health Services Agency confirmed measles have been detected in an unvaccinated child, according to a press release from the county on Thursday.

The child reportedly was found to be carrying the infectious disease after returning from a trip outside of the United States, according to the county.

Stanislaus County is now one of the three counties within the Sacramento region to have confirmed measles cases.

On March 8, Sacramento and Yolo counties announced they had confirmed measles cases. Each positive detection was found within a healthcare setting.

“Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can quickly spread among people who are notimmune to it,” says Dr. Thea Papasozomenos, Stanislaus County Public Health Officer.“Unfortunately, it can cause serious health complications in some people. The best way to protect yourself and your family against measles is by getting vaccinated.”

Typical symptoms of measles:• Fever• Cough• Runny nose• Red and watery eyes

“Within a few days, a characteristic rash develops, starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body,” the county wrote in a news release. “Complications of measles can include pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and, in severe cases, death.”
