Spike in flooding red alerts as River Severn levels rise puts A417 at risk
Flooding is expected and people are urged to be prepared

Heavy rain and rising river levels have seen a flurry of 'red alert' Flood Warnings issued in Tewkesbury and down to near Gloucester. The Environment Agency has acted after the wet weather on Thursday which continued today (Friday, February 9).

The first flood warning - which mean flooding is expected - was activated on the River Severn last night but a flurry were also issued today. It means the A417 between the Over roundabout and Maisemore could be closed while Sandhurst Lane is just passable.

The Met Office has forecast more showers over the weekend and this will keep river levels elevated. Luckily, none of the rain looks like it's going to be heavy.

Flooding is a risk as high spring tides coincide with high river levels after the rain. Peaks on the River Severn at Sandhurst and Maisemore are due on Friday evening and then Saturday morning.

The warnings on the Severn are at Abbots Court, Deerhurst; Apperley and The Leigh; Bushley; River Severn at Chaceley and Haw Bridge; Sandhurst and Maisemore; Severn Ham, Tewkesbury and River Severn at Tewkesbury.

Tewkesbury Borough Council has warned about the dangers of flooding. It said on X, formerly twitter: "Flood water is dangerous – it can be fast flowing and conceal hidden dangers such as sharp objects. Keep children away from flood water. Avoid walking or driving through water."
