F1 Miami Grand Prix LIVE! Verstappen wins - Race result, latest news and reaction from fifth race of 2022

1 Miami Grand Prix - LIVE!
Charles Leclerc was unable to reassert his authority in the Formula One 2022 world title race with victory in F1’s inaugural race around Miami.
Saturday qualifying saw the championship leader stick his Ferrari on pole position with a fantastic lap, almost matched by teammate Carlos Sainz to clock a 1-2 for the Scuderia.
In third was Max Verstappen, victorious a fortnight ago in Emilia Romagna where Leclerc spun out late on but with an error of his own as he began his final qualifying lap yesterday.
But the Dutchman leapt off the line to swoop to second place early on, before getting the job done on Leclerc and building a big lead.

However, Verstappen held on with Sainz coming home third ahead of a pushing Sergio Perez, and the two Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

“It’s tough. I’ve looked at it a few times now, it’s tricky and I don’t know if [Gasly] had damage or something. I left space obviously, I knew he was on my right. The track kind of kinks to the right and I’m going with the flow of the circuit and it didn’t look like he was.
“He was looking in his right mirror... I don’t know. I thought I did what I normally do but it just ended up a silly accident - quite annoyed I guess as we could have scored a few points today but it happens.”
It was a good race for Red Bull, who closed the gap on Ferrari in the race for the Constructors’ Championship.

“We were betting for a safety car for George but it went against Lewis. There are no happy or not happy moments, just a bit down, we are third-quickest on the road and in a bit of no man’s land. This is where we are, behind the Red Bulls and Ferrari.
“We had a good sessions on Friday and we must dissect why that is because we are not on top of it at the moment.”
“I really don’t know, in that scenario I have no clue where everyone is. When the team say, ‘It’s your choice’... I don’t have the information to make the decision. That’s what your job is! Make the decision for me, you’ve got all the details - I don’t. So that’s what you rely on the guys for but today they gave it to me and I didn’t understand it.
“But it’s just a bit unfortunate on the safety car and at least we got points today, we’re finishing, reliability is good. We just have to keep trying, I’m excited to at one stage take a step forward, which we haven’t yet.”
“No upgrades ever needed, you just need to dye your hair! To be honest, we’ve had the pace all weekend - qualifying was the anomaly and we were really frustrated to be P18. We benefited from the collisions in front but we were right there catching the cars in front. Very happy.”

“After the safety car, we were quite lucky Ferrari didn’t pit for Softs. But then once Charles was in DRS we couldn’t shake him off. Max is in so much pressure it’s easy to make mistakes. It took about five, six laps for break the DRS and he managed it from there.
“The problem is DRS is so powerful, we couldn’t drop them after sector one. Finally, Charles had a bit of a moment and Max used it to build a lead.”
