Spain's Euro 2024 hero Mikel Oyarzabal and team-mate Mikel Merino have been branded as 'traitors' for representing their country.

Oyarzabal broke English hearts on Sunday night as he scored an 86th minute goal to win the European Championship final.

His Real Sociedad team-mate Merino also scored a critical match-winner against Germany in the quarter-finals.

But it appears that was not enough to please fans in the Basque region of the country.

Radicals branded the pair as 'traitors' as crossed-out swastika graffiti was left on Oyarzabal's mother's house, El Confidencial reports.

Writing was also found saying: 'No to the assimilation of the Spanish National Team.'

Carlos García, a former councillor in Elorrio where the graffiti was sprayed, announced that he has filed a complaint for hate crime.

He said: 'I have just filed a complaint with the Municipal Police of Elorrio for a hate crime against the miserable authors of these graffiti and banners. 

'Against the National Team, against Spain and against the European champion players Merino and Oyarzabal (His family is from Elorrio).'

The graffiti is in stark contrast to the celebrations that took place in Spain after their triumph, with tensions between the Basque region of the country still rife.

This also comes after Alvaro Morata sparked a storm in Spain's camp after threatening to quit the national team after the tournament over 'nonsense' criticism.

Morata, who has captained his country in Germany this summer, previously admitted it would be 'easiest' for him to move abroad because of the poor treatment and laid bare the effect on his family, including his wife and four young children.

He also floated the idea of leaving Atletico Madrid just a week on from seemingly pledging his future to the club, raging that 'in Spain, there's no respect for anyone'.

Ahead of his appearance against France in the first semi-final, an explosive interview with El Mundo has caused uproar in his homeland.

'It could be [my last tournament with Spain],' Morata told the outlet. 'It's a possibility that I don't want to talk about too much, but it's probable.'

The striker, who played for Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea before joining Atletico, initially on loan in 2019, has endured a tense relationship with Spanish supporters.

He had been whistled during Spain's campaign at Euro 2020 and notably jeered throughout a friendly against Brazil at the Bernabeu in March.
